Description

My brother and his crew are doing a huge remodel on a house here in Seattle. It started out to be what they call a "one story with a basement" and they're tearing it down to the foundation. As it rises again, phoenix-like one assumes, it will consist of a finished basement, main floor (public rooms), second floor (bedrooms), and a rooftop garden with a small third floor area which will service the garden. This is a view out the current living room window on a typical day in Seattle. Gray, cloudy, drizzly ... you'll just have to trust me that there's a view here. Heck ... I have to trust Trent that there's a view here! I haven't seen it myself. Bill and I went over there on Tuesday to take "during" photographs for the project. Of course I couldn't help but take a few artsy shots for my own amusement. There are only so many ways you can shoot stud walls! We'll see how much I actually got that's interesting. This image came about quite by accident. I stood in different areas of the house and took shots around in circles so as to cover everything. When I saw these window photos later I wondered what would happen if I did a pano of two of them. The result just spoke to me of deconstruction. The disparate angles of the shots really conveys the MOOD of being in a house that's being torn apart. No matter what they do to this house though, the view from that corner will remain the same. I just love photography! This is such fun! Zoom ... I left it large.

The "during" is always so hard to figure out. And then when you're done,. you can't remember the "before". Good thing you're there to remind them!!

This is the kind of shot that I love to see--and live to make, though I have yet to do a legitimate pano-sort of thing. My only attempt is...well...dull, but that's because I was bored and spun (very slowly) taking pictures at each pause within my spin. It was cloudy, overcast, and quite boring, so though I'm proud of the pano, I'm NOT proud of what I decided to focus on...but all of that is to say that yeah, photography is a whole lot of fun: it's like any other art--you get the chance to play, to try new things, to see the same old reality in a DIFFERENT and more appealing way, and you get fun stuff like this shot. Judging by the postworked window that isn't there, I'd love to actually SEE a finished window with a sill with that intriguing, deconstructed little jog to it. That's just fantastic! Really wonderful! Funny thing is, there are asymetrical windows like that...and if you guessed in Prague, you're right. They make windows crooked on purpose over there! This rocks. I just love it! It's so deliciously moody...and the weather is moist eh? That's gotta be better than absolutely frigid and dry!

Yes, you've captured the feeling perfectly, that disjointed off-kilter whirl of unfamiliarity...

Nice job, Tara. I like the disjointed pano joint, giving the window that irregular appearance. The non-view heightens this effect. I've taken a lot of photos of construction as I find such interesting. Glad to see others find so, too. You've already seen some, but I'll post more in the future. Keep up the good work! :-)

Fascinating photo, Tara, and yet more proof of your ability to create art out of virtually anything you encounter! This is really cool - I like it! I can see where there might be a decent view on a clear day!

Could have sworn this was the aftermath of an earthquake, which can/do happen around Seattle.

I've heard that Mozart has been in his grave since 1796 'decomposing' but deconstruction? I guess that's the new term for teardown. Someone once said something that fits Seattle perfectly - 'Nice weather for ducks'. This is an excellent pano. The off kilter is not immeadiately apparent. At first you just get a feeling that something's amiss. Well done.
