Description

We were at our local beach the other day right at about high tide. This is looking out across Puget Sound at the south end of Whidbey Island on the right, and the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula on the left. I don't know why I tell you these things. I mean ... who cares? It's a beautiful spot. Five miles up the beach is a beautiful spot. Ten miles in the other direction is also beautiful. It's lovely at high tide, but it's equally lovely at low tide. These pilings have always been a mystery to me, and I've recently found a book that promises to explain their history, as well as that of the wreck(s) north of here. If the book turns out to be interesting, maybe I'll read it to you! :P

This is stunning! Simply gorgeous! This ONE photo is good enough to make me want to write all kinds of stories about these pilings...and who knows, maybe something WILL come out of that. I'll let you know. Maybe it's my current frame of mind, but this image reminds me a lot of something Ursula K. LeGuin would write about in one of those short but whompin' interesting novels she's known for, and I just found her collection of short stories "Changing Planes" which contains one of my all-time favorite stories: "The Island of the Immortals." WOW...this kinda reminds me of the mood of all of that stuff...nicely rich and full of texture and implications of a bit of everything. The pilings are like characters in and of themselves; that cloudy sky is so nicely dramatic and rich and every details of this capture that you've presented here just fits perfectly. This is making a trip into my favorites, and maybe later I'll see if something oozes out of my writing pores.

Great capture Tara, and fairly nice weather - for Washington. Must be a little south of the Mukilteo ferry landing, am I right?

The economy stole our retirement and my wife's dreams of that island in the distance. This place is so blasted pretty ;-)
