Description

A shot I took at the public garden near home. The child seemed so concentrated on her fantastic tricycling along the snows of Anctartica, avoiding icebergs as well as hordes of rogue penguins she didn't even see me. The advent of the bicycle in the 1880's stimulated great controversy about women’s proper role in society. Questions of how they should ride, when they should ride, who they should ride with were considered by commentators. Many critics were certain that bicycle riding threatened women's health, morals, and reputation. Critics argued that women bicyclists favored shorter skirts, thus inviting insults and advances. Moreover, by tilting the bicycle seat, they could beget of foster the habit of masturbation. For advocates like Maria E. Ward, however, the bicycle was an educational factor, creating the desire for progress, broadening the intelligence and intensifying love of home and country. Thank you for your kind comments.

Wonderful image and narrative. She does look very intent on her travels. I love the snowy branch going across the scene and the selective coloring. Beautiful composition and lacy effect of the other branches. It's funny to think of the horrors and dire predictions about women's clothing. Then came World War I. Women were needed in the factories, which meant pants and short hair, and there were more important things to think about, at least for the time being.

Your little missives, in regards to females on bikes, will always bring a smile to my face - because it reminds me very much of a movie actress riding a bike through the streets, and finally leaning against a pole or streetlight having an orgasm ... your image has very little to do, with what I am talking about - but is absolutely charming, BB

This is really wonderful! You've certainly captured the spirit of adventure and drama with the rather imposing and intimidating textures and structures.

This is such a rich and vivid piece of photographic work. I love the child's antarctic adventures and I hear that the tricycle is the favorite method of antarctic exploration these days. Well, okay, maybe not. I love the incongruous bits...the tricycle and the child, but the snow is everywhere, and the child herself is bundled up against the cold. Marvelously seen! I love the trees as well...they look so ancient, or at least "experienced" in that way that trees can manage...as if they've seen everything and are content to simply grow as they've always grown. The information, as always, is fascinating, and it reminds me of the many discussions I've had over the years concerning sex and gender and the completely insane notions we come up with in terms of human sexuality, morality, and whether or not things like pants, bicycles, and even sewing machines have some influence on morality? Insanity!
