Description

Sometimes you just gotta get away from the computer and do something non-digital. Besides, I needed an excuse to test out some new Derwent Coloursoft pencils to see if they were an apt replacement for the old Design Spectracolor pencils that I loved, and of course aren't made anymore. I happened to see this picture in Seraphinekitten's gallery over on deviantART. My muse kicked me in the back of the head and said "get drawing ya twit" (my muse and I get along soo well, can ya tell?). So after Seraphine gave me her kind permission, that's just what I did. It's been quite a while since I did any "finished" traditional work, and it was interesting shifting gears and trying to remember, "oh yeah, these things don't have an undo (eep! no crtl+z!?! I'm doomed!)." Well, not doomed, more like challenged, which sounds weird to me considering that before I switched over to doing everything digitally, coloured pencil was my media of choice. But hey, that's part of the fun of doing art, you have to challenge yourself, or you just end up stuck in a rut and bored with it. Looking back over my recent work (personal stuff at any rate), I feel like I was heading that way. The colour pallet that I was using mainly was getting to be a lot of the same thing, so doing this was nice since it really did break out of that. I also like the challenge of trying to emulate the depth of field from the photo, which is actually something that I haven't done in nay type of pencil before. Is it perfect? No, not at all, but there's more that I like about it than I don't (and yes, I am a right evil critic of my own work). I think that I'll revisit this after I get a few more coloured pencil pieces done (and get that comfort level back with the media), and give it another go so I can gauge my improvement. Done with a combination of Derwent Coloursoft, Derwent Studio, and Prismacolor pencils on Cason 98lb Mi-Teintes pastel paper. Thanks for stopping by and having a look.

Well, you know already that I can't draw any pictures, so I can't give you professional feedback, but IMVHO this one turned out great! Especially her face has something that I like a lot. And the DOF works well, too. Unfortunately Í can't check out the original work on Deviant art, as this site is blocked for me here at work (duuuuhhhh....), but later at home I'll check cause I'm far too curious :o) Now I have to go and check out your latest work! ~Sassy~
