Description

Down at our local beach one day, there was a guy with a nice camera wading around in the water. I got such a kick out of it that I just had to take his picture! He saw me pointing the camera in his direction and apologised for getting in the way of my shot. LOL! Of course he WAS my shot! :P He was out looking for ducks, and was wading around in the surf (if you can call it that) in order to get closer. My little Canon has a nice telephoto, so I took a couple pictures of the ducks he was interested in so you could see what he was up to. Charming young man, down there with his daughter, his camera and his waders. Turns out he's totally obsessed with taking pictures of birds. He can't imagine anything else. Literally. He watched me taking pictures for a while, and then had to see in my viewfinder what I'd been doing. If it wasn't a duck, he wasn't pointing the camera at it! I hope he got the shots he wanted. Apparently the waders were just until he can afford a longer lens.

I love the shot and the story with it: snippets of real life shared with others with passions similar, but different in small ways. I love the idea that someone would specialize in one type of photographic subject; that's something I find a bit alien, but then I find lots of things a bit alien--I think it would be quite fascinating to talk photography with him; I might learn something of ducks that way, and say something about those little quackers to Pavl that would leave him impressed, since he's quite fond of ducks...well, river ducks at least.

I know a lot of folk, all blokes as it happens, with a similar obsession and HUMUNGOUS equipment. But being a dilettante keeps me safe from such a tight focus Love the shots and the story and great that his daughter can go with him!

Yeah my mate thinks nothing of spending $5000 on a lens just to shoot birds! The thing is as long as a baseball bat and about as light to carry as a Tiger Tank! Luckily for me and my wallet, birds are not really my thing photographically speaking! Oh and he wraps the lens in camouflage patterned paper to blend in, but all the birds just seem to sit there and laugh at him. I don't think they are as blind/silly as he thinks they are!

''If it wasn't a duck, he wasn't pointing the camera at it!'' Sounds like he likes being 'single'? WINK. EXCELLENT shot and narrative!

A man with an obsession; those are cool ducks, wonder what kind they are? I don't think I've seen them before. I also would be afraid to take my camera into the water, knowing me I'd trip on a rock and drop it.

One photographer shoots another as ducks watch in horror! Well, actually they really didn't seem that upset:-) Always enjoy a good story to backfill a fine photo:*

I had to laugh at your text and durleybeachbum's comment.....suppose you over heard this....... Tara " Turns out he's totally obsessed with taking pictures of birds." Durley "I know a lot of folk, all blokes as it happens, with a similar obsession and HUMUNGOUS equipment". :-O Great photo, a study in human endeavour..and nice you include his 'target' Imagine if he came across this and found you had better photos.....

Wade a minute! You mean this guy is so obsessed with the ducks that he ventured out into the cold water to record them? Ironically, I'd probably do the same thing under those circumstances. I have some high rubber boots sitting in my garage for just an eventuality, and/or floods. Then again, I do take advantage of my local parks with their ample lakes, just teeming with waterfowl to shoot, via camera, of course. Anyway, a cool collage of the avians and the photographer.

A dedicated aviary photographer - wonderful photo and story. Different strokes, I guess... It's one of those things that makes life and the photographic 'experience' all the more enjoyable! Great one, Tara!
