Description

North of Zion National Park, The Virgin River merges with the Deep Creek, south of that the Kolob Creek joins in and then the Goose Creek merges in. All of that water comes from snow melt, from the mountains and plateaus further north and enters Zion Canyon. They call this area “The Zion Narrows” and the Narrows is a slot canyon, not very wide and 100s of feet high. I entered the Narrows at the Riverwalk trail head on March 7, 1996. This shot was taken at the end of the paved trail. I walked back to my car and locked everything in my car trunk (the only car in the parking lot). I was about to make a bad decision and wade up into the narrows. Most of the route requires hiking in the river under conditions with swift water and slippery rocks, but there are some sandy areas and areas where chunks of rock have fallen down into the river. Some actually called them “rest areas”. The warning sign stated that no hikers were allowed into the Narrows when the river has been flowing more than 125 cfs (cubic feet per second) and to check the weather and be aware of potential flash floods, which makes travel tedious and dangerous. This hike was best done in the summer after snow-melt in the high country has subsided and air and water temperature were warmer. Being an over confident 54 year old – I headed in. I had read that the red, pink and orange colors, in the rock walls, were worth the effort. In about 10 minutes, I had no feeling in my legs, had stepped into a depression and I was up to my arm pits in very cold water. This is when the boy genius decided that I was actually not that bright and headed out. I do have to admit that it was beautiful up in there but changing into dry cloths, in a parking lot, with snow in the adjacent grass, did send me straight back to the lodge and a warm shower. I believe that the mountain in the photo is the Mountain of Mystery. This photo was scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana
