Description

the Jätti has the dubious distinction of being the most expensive passenger-ship assembled in Earth orbit in the post-war era. In the initial optimism that followed the end of the war now referred to as "Humanity's First Interstellar War" plans were being drawn up for a wide range of ships, and in the rush to be first, this ship was begun only a few months after the fighting had stopped. Bold plans and huge new projects often lead to unexpected problems, and this ship suffered an astonishing array of them. A Finnish journalist, after seeing the initial blue-prints, referred to the ship as "a giant", and somehow Jätti seemed to be the name everyone was calling the project. It's a testament to human stubbornness that the ship was completed, a year and a half behind schedule, and 5 times more than initial cost estimates. It did fly, making the run from Earth to the nearby stars, then gradually drifting outward as newer and more cost-effective transports began to take over. The Jätti may be one of the most familiar ships to anybody who studies starship construction, but few people would like to be cited as a "what NOT to do" example... -from Author and documentarian Dawson Welles' documentary "The strange world of human construction in space" *********** The above story is also something of an example to myself, as well. Making this ship model ended up being a supreme test of my own stubbornness and patience, as the model became bigger and bigger, and my poor computer found itself in screaming agony. The final placement of the engine sections took my computer almost 13 hours to process, and that's not even rendering it! Next time I do this in a more efficient manner, I swear! At any rate, this was modeled by myself, using components I'd made before and mostly my own textures as well. Planet and background as well as other post work was all done in Photoshop. The file size topped out at just over 101 megabytes, so I am skirting dangerously close to the doom-zone with Bryce, but I do like how the complex structure looks, even if I did run out of patience and ended up not putting in the cooling-array it should have included. Thanks for taking a look, and as usual comments/critiques are encouraged!

CJ Cherryh, eat your heart out! She's know for writing really complex tales involving ships that look like this--usually with "transit vanes" attached, but they're not as impressive. THIS rocks. The details are stunning and the lighting is amazing. I'd love to see/read more concerning this gargantuan beauty. It's quite inspiring, too...I'm not in "space mode" right now, but this is really making me want to think more in that direction. I'm sure there are zillions of tales this image may inspire. This is quite amazing! One of your best pieces, which is saying something, since you have so many of them to choose from! Yeah, I like this!

Excellent! The moment I saw the ship, I was thinking ... oohh, Bryce is going to start choking on that one - too many objects. Glad it eventually finished.

this is super cool looking. maybe you can render some of it in stages and make sure the lighting is the same in each stage and then put them together. i saw others in other 3d programs stateing what they did and that how they got around the problem you are having... just a idea.

In Awe of the model and it's design..as well in awe that Bryce rendered it without having it's trademark hissy fits.I know only too well the limits it allows before the dreaded "Crash" screen appears(or Doom Zone as you mentioned)...I've pushed said limits on more than one occasion and have lost my share of some complex-ed scenes that all I did was add just "one" more thing....(sigh)..I commend you for being able to get this most impressive model rendered with the detail you where able to give it....(smile)..

HOLY FRAK!!! I think my little laptop that I have Bryce on would run and hide under the bed if I tried something like this.... Heck it crashes every time I try to fiddle with those Tron textures or anything else in the material editor - I've got to reformat my other graphics computer, put a better video card in it, and put Bryce on that one... But I digress.. This is absolutely beyond words - jut look at the detail in this ship! Utterly amazing! I just sat here for 10 minutes looking at this, and the longer I look, the more I see. Incredible, Mike, just incredible!
