Description

I've been doing something unusual for me: I'm watching the Superbowl. I don't normally do this you see, but I have a housemate this year who's a fan of the game, so we've been watching it and actually having alot of fun, at that. So at halftime I grabbed my Nikon and ran out to shoot some more snow and ice. The previous post was done on a tiny canon digital which does okay, but is much more grainy and doesn't shoot in RAW format like the Nikon. So I wanted to see what I'd get with the better camera, and I must say, if you're going to shoot icicles I highly recommend night and a flash if you're close enough! I just love what it does to the reflections and the contrasts are awesome. Better still there's just a few snowflakes falling, and they light up in the flash like tiny meteors dropping by. I can't wait to try some more experiments, now. Anyway, this odd branch is in the path of dripping water, but as the ice build up it dips slowly downward and has made a truly bizarre and gravity-defying shape. I cheated a bit, there was a very blurry and dark icicle in the background that I cloned out to get this lovely high-contrast shot. I just love how Photoshop lets me cheat to improve the composition! Hope you all are having a good evening everyone, and thanks for taking a look!

Strange. Beautiful. Strange! Wind-blown, from the looks of it and well...this is just ultra-cool. I love the intensity of the ice itself and the darkness of that smooth, featureless background. This is really super-amazing stuff!

This is a lovely high contrast shot, for sure! Love, too, that the flash captured the snowflakes falling ♥

Really nice one, Mike! It's facinating how icecicles take on so many odd shapes. You got a great capture of this wierd ice formation. It looks like crystalline spikes from the skeleton of some strange alien creature. Yep - ya gotta love Photoshop!
