Description
Carnival started in venice last Saturday. Here a substantial group of people organized themselves as the tatty crusaders of the First Crusade. While single or couples of masks are easier to see, there are many, Venetians and 'strangers' ('foresti' in Venetian, that means 'foreigners literally) alike that work many months and come as an orgnanized group of Carnival masks.
The People's Crusade is part of the First Crusade and lasted roughly six months from April 1096 to October. It is also known as the Peasants' Crusade or the Paupers' Crusade. Led by Walter Sans Avoir and Peter the Hermit, the army was destroyed by the Seljuk forces of Kilij Arslan.
PS just in case: This post is NOT a political piece of an advice in order to manage the situation in North Africa !!! far from it!

I love the way so many things in Europe that aren't political have political undertones simply because there's so much history over there...this reminds me of one of those things--it could easily have been done just for fun and yet, Venice, like so many other places in Europe has such a long and rich history that even fun events might carry something of a political echo. Ah, but that's what happens when history isn't something that you read in a book, but instead pass every day on the way to work. On a level it's incredibly fun and allows you to feel a sense of historical continuity leading from then to now...it gives you a feeling that you're a part of something that hasn't been torn down in order to build a parking lot for the shopping mall across the street. And so having said that, I will also say that I love this shot. It has such intensity to it, a bright liveliness, despite the overall "pauper's drab" colors. What a spectacle this must be. I'm glad I saw this. It's wonderful.

Ah yes, the First Crusade. The goal was the Holy Land but they never made it further than Western Anatolia. Strange event for a celebration but a terrific image.
