Description

By 1998 most of the lumber mills on the Samoa Peninsula had closed. Much of the area has since become a ghost town. There is still one mill operated by Sierra Pacific Industries. That and the Eureka Municipal Airport provide some employment for the ninety-eight families left in Samoa. Since 2001 there have been efforts to develop recreation and tourism but little progress has been made to date.

This is a great landscape, and I particularly like the foreground plants. Excellent work!

Always pains me to see a town go under. Went to a wiki for Samoa, CA...interesting history of lumber operations there.

Tourism can play a role in preservation, and some areas are tourist spots because they are just so gorgeous that everyone wants to see them. It is a delicate balance between preserving and destroying, allowing access and overwhelming a site. Some of my favorite explorations are on Hill Country back-roads. I enjoy the solitude and the lonely places. Unfortunately, many of them have "No Trespassing" signs plastered all over them. Beautiful image! I love the composition and tones. Wonderful serenity, with echos of a less peaceful past. I love lines of the fences; across the foreground, making a shadowed mark along the far bank, and crossing the water. Beautiful capture of the plants in the foreground.
