I am an environmental scientist. A large part of my career has been dedicated to scientific research into the structure of ecosystems and factors that affect them. Quite early on, it became apparent that certain mathematical iterative principles formed geometries that coincided exactly with those found in natural ecosystems. And by ecosystems, I do not mean just plants and animals. The same principles also apply to quantum physics, geology, meteorology and on up to the formation of galaxies. These relationships were championed most publicly by the brilliant mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot, the founder of fractal geometry.
To my mind, the structure of natural ecosystems through application of these iterative processes revealed not only the genius and subtlety of nature but also its incomparable beauty. Â

the swirls in this are wonderful and I love the coloring! I thought of frosting, too... but I'm hungry. :) I love lilacs! I have two rows of them along side my house and a stone walkway passes through them. there is a mixture of two different shades of purple but no white ones have been planted yet. maybe I'll mix in a white one this year in your honor. :)

This is a wonderful rendition of lilacs Stan. We have 3 huge lilac bushes just outside our back door. The growing season for them is so short here they tend to come into full flower shortly after the snow leaves in late May. At present everything is still dormant as the snow is more than waist deep and temps are in the -15C range as a high. Seeing your images of such sights and those that post post pictures of their gardens helps us hold onto the hope of spring.

Fantastice creation.

If you could send them the scent, it could very well suit your fractal of today. It represent the lilac, as your very fine story completely.

You have captured the essence of the lilac tree in this wonderful fractal. They really are the most beautiful shrub and I would love to be able to walk through a whole lot of them when they were in flower, the scent would be glorious. No wonder you went to sleep and had marvellous dreams.

I can smell the lilacs in your beauifully lit image. We don't grow them because it's not cold enough in winter. But they do grow in the South Island, but never as fragrant as the cooler climate ones.

Lilac's are very pretty flowers and smell so nice. (ours are the purple one's). When I was way younger some of us would take a small piece of the petal and suck the sweet nectar from it. Your fractal is awesome Stan, fantastic colors and lighting. I really enjoyed reading your text too!! Thanks again for sharing Stan.
