Description
This is the second in my series depicting the various sub-races of elves from my story. The Sky Elves are another of the original elven sub-races, along with the First Born and the Sea Elves.
The Sky Elves came about from the "mating" of the element of magic with the air. As such they're magical skills lie more in the area of weather manipulation - lightning, hurricanes and air elemental control. While not nearly as prone to rages as their fiery First Born cousins, Sky Elves can be provoked to the point of extreme rage. For the poor fool who causes this it can seem like they're completely calm one second only to erupt within the next.
For the most part however the Sky Elves are much less warlike than the First Born, and most intellectual and artistic contributions to elven society can be traced back to one of the major families of Sky Elves, such as the Stormchasers. The written language of the elves was developed by C'uiel Stormchaser thought by many to be the most important figure from elven history aside from The First himself.
While the First Born are pretty massive and muscular the Sky Elves are much more willowy and delicately built. In addition to their slighter build, the Sky Elves differ from the First Born in several other areas. They're not as tall, though you'll be hard pressed to find one below 6'8, and most are a bit over seven feet tall. Their hair colors are usually a stormy silver grey or deepest night black. Occasionally one with cobalt blue hair is born and these children are considered to be blessed with the luck of their ancestors. They tend to be very pale, some almost blue they're so white. They're extremely tolerant of cold and it's unheard of one to succumb to hypothermia. It is said that even a white dragon's breath can do them no harm.
Most Sky Elves do not pursue a life as a pure warrior. Most are casters or artisans of some sort. They excel at delicate detail work, so they often are jewelers, weavers, painters and sculptors. Those who do pick up a sword or bow almost always completely weave their magic into their combat, electrifying their weapons and bolstering their armor with a shield of swirling air or ice.
The rarest of the casters among the Sky Elves are those known as Blood Mages. They are the elite healers among the elves, and strike terror into the enemy upon the battlefield as the elves of this special brand of magic can pull the life from their enemies in order to heal their brethren. They loath being compared to necromancers. They view necromancy as a bastardized form of their magic, of which the entire blame they have placed on the shoulders of the gnomes.
