Description

A squatting King of the Road holds an ironic, perhaps mocking, message: 'I Love Graz' in a corner of downtown Graz. On the wall a St. George is killing his dragon, and a notice warns: Parking bicycles is forbidden. Thus, some law-abiding citizen with a sense of humour propped his bicycle against a street pole forbidding car parking. Thanks for your kind comments.

This is simply fantastic! I love the treatment of this photo, the glimpse into a kind of life that I miss terribly, and some wonderful ironies...very continental ironies! This is absolutely superb and you have such a keen eye for these sorts of things. I love wandering around (at least virtually) with you, spying all of the interesting corners that so many people ignore in the daily hustle and bustle of life. This is really amazing work. Oh, and in case I didn't say...I like it a lot!

I like the art work above and to the right of the door but the recessed door steals the scene for me. Dana

This is a rich and humorous capture! I love the bombastic saint and the king squatting in the shadowed corner. How wonderful that the city gives the bicyclist a spot to park and make a statement at the same time. I like the shadow of the wheel. Superb work!

The thumbnail attracted me because I love old doors, and then your narrative made me laugh. This image contains an entire story! Brilliant capture, Sandra.

I'm obviously a big fan of this series. (I'm a big fan of all your series, I haven't even finished commenting on the "art" series you did a while back: God, I'm not even done commenting in everyone's gallery this time around; but I had to come back here again as there's just too much to not return to.) This is another iconic capture. Obviously the whole 'parking' thing is terrific by itself. But also, the play of the bike against the trash receptacle, and the long shadow from the bike, culminating in that "period" of a street-sign (well, its shadow): Just really good & complex visual music. And that's the foreground of an image that has an old cloistered, decayed door in the background---filled with some very rich shadows & hues---the St. George, which almost seems 'random' though maybe it isn't; the painted king & signs above him; the shadows from various jutting walls, etc; and the road between fore & background, as well as the signs, and your inclusion of little snippets of sill, wall, etc, on the edges of this image. A really fine melange of urban 'stuff', in what feels like a cloistered space (even if, in person, it isn't). You are really really good at all this, Sandra: Cities owe you a debt. Wonderful urban-seeing, again, with your always-acute eye for multiple historical & cultural images and the out & out 'play' that accompanies them in spaces like these. Terrific. I'll be back again...
