Description

This is my rendition of Honor Harrington, heroine of the David Weber "Honorverse" novels and stories along with Nimitz, her alien Treecat companion. When I first started my series of Warrior Women portraits, Larry suggested that I include Honor. While I had heard of her and admired David Mattingly's cover art for the novels, I had never read the books. Well, now I have read half a dozen books and short stories about her, and I can understand Larry's suggestion. Honor is rather like a female "Horatio Hornblower" and is very much a warrior. After reading the fiction, I couldn't wait to do an image of her. But it had to be an image that was worthy of this extraordinary character. And that turned out to be a real challenge. I could find no suitable military costumes out there for V4, so I cobbled together something to resemble the uniform that Honor wears on many of the book covers. (It was one of those book covers, "On Basilisk Station" that inspired this image.) Finding a suitable candidate to play Nimitz was also a challenge. I ended up heavily modifying the Milcat and adding a modified Lynx texture. Then I had to pose him in such a way to hide the fact that he only has four legs. Fun! I have never worked this hard or this long on a non-commission piece. It's taken two weeks and hundreds of test renders to get to the final version. But it was a lot of fun and a real learning experience. It's a pleasure to dedicate this image to Larry, with my thanks for steering me toward some fine fiction and a truly fascinating character.

And it really is a most extraordinarie render, both soft and sharp at the same time. I have not read the books, but love the Hornblower books. Your picture is far better and more modern than Mattingly's covers, that appears a little dated IMO. The cat has a fabulous texture!

I hadn't read that series of books (and now I'm going to have to!), but I think you achieved what you were striving for. She looks like a strong and exemplary Naval officer. The cobbling of outfits to mix and match is truly the challenging part to get that desired look, and usually fun part of the process too... I think you did a good job on the cat, the posing and hiding the rear half. I too do a countless number of untold test renders that are better not kept track of during my setups. That's usually what makes it painstaking - the waiting. Your dedication and perseverance had paid off, Now that's a job well done!

have read them all...yer in for a treat...;) I seem to remember the description was sort of a triangular face, very short hair, and the ever-present Treecat...;) Very good work, keep 'em coming.

I am speechless - and THAT is something for ME LOL! Absolutely gorgeous render and you have captured both Honor and Nimitz very very well! I am glad you enjoyed yourself too - both the artwork AND the books - that makes it all worth the effort! Nice work and thanks for the generous dedi.

Fantastic interpretation of one of my favorite heroines! Your portrait of Lady Honor is striking, giving a perfect image of her pure beauty and hinting at her qualities of interior strength, sense of duty and integrity. And her dress uniform is perfect! As is Nimitz! Applause for the artist!
