Description

There's a road that parallels Highway 101 for several miles in Northern California called "Avenue of the Giants." It takes you back through tall forests, open river land, and seemingly everything in between. There were several times when it felt like we were alone in the Redwoods. This was one of my favorite places. I loved the silence and the solitude. Starting next weekend this place will be full of people, but we were fortunate enough to be there before the crowds. The tourist attractions weren't even open yet. The Redwoods are everything you've heard, and more ...

I see redwoods, I see lush greenery, and for some odd reason, I expect to see Ewoks. Okay, maybe I've seen Return of the Jedi too many times, and the "forest moon of Endor" was (in all actuality) not very far from the spot you took this photo. Funny how that works out, ain't it? Just point a camera away from roads and such and voila you're somewhere else, even in a galaxy far, far away, never mind that redwoods only grow on earth, as far as we know. Oh well. I suppose I should say that the above portion of this comment really doesn't have much to do with anything, except maybe an obsessive amount of movie trivia, but there you have it. I've gone spinning off to other places simply because of a super photograph. I love the lush greenery, and the visual implications of silence...or near silence. I'm from the midwest, ya know, and so I can't imagine actual silence: we've got too many cicadas and crickets for that. But still, I can sense the silence. I love the name of this place, too; it sounds like something that deserves a Basil Polidorius or Jerry Goldsmith or Bear McCreary musical accompanying score. And now, after more rambling, I'll say that I love this shot! It's simply gorgeous!

Nice work! Superb capture of these California giants. Beautiful, lush colors. These trees are relatively young. Someday you must visit Sequoia National Park and see their grandparents.

Beautiful shot Tara and I read somewhere many years ago that these trees have soft bark for protection against lightning strikes. They protect themselves by shredding their bark in the event and by so doing they protect their core. Not a lot of people knew that I bet!!!!! Jeff.
