Description

Around this set I built a 3 metre high white wall which I lit up so the chrome would be bright. (you don't light chrome you light what it reflects!) I lit the scene itself with 3 lights for an overall exposure, then reopened the lens on the same sheet of film, with the studio darkened and painted light into the wheels and motor to make them pop even more with a colour corrected spotlight wrapped up in a leather jacket so it didn't burn my arms....the whole exposure was about 2 minutes worth of painting over the top of the initial flash exposure. shot at f22 on a Sinar 4x5inch on Ektachrome. we built the set fairly quickly, they were fun days in this old studio, it was built on top of my town's first graveyard and was a very interesting place to live in...a very creative time in my life... it is a block of high rise apartments now. love and respect to you good people carl

i am a (sport-)biker and not a fan of this heavy metal things on wheels which are made for gliding along a straight road, but to look at them and especially your well done picture i like. very interesting also the "making of", lots of tricks you have done here.... and the result gives you right. great location...sad that it doesn't exist any more.

Amazing work here. It's photographic, but it also has a somewhat airbrush-painted quality to it. Nicely lit bits of chrome tend to generate that effect, and it's something that was really utilized in science fictional artwork in the 1980s through mid 1990s...needless to say I love that style of art: the hyper-smooth, sleek, snazzy, sexy stuff, and this shot reminds me of that in that it's brilliantly done, wonderfully moody, but still sleek and clean and extremely elegant. This is marvelous!

Ha Captain Moustache, I like it when you post pictures from your vault. This is very nice and I like , in your narrative, the way you remember every little details about the making of this picture. And it makes me remember of my bike-days.. a long, long time ago :o))) O.XXX

Wonderful. The shot of the red bike had that filter that made it a little cartoonish (for my tastes - no disrespect intended), but this is a special photo that I LOVE!

Top notch photgraph. Absolutely brilliant. A friend of mine tried that light painting trick on a truck once. Outdoors shot at night. Popped the flashgun a few times along its length. The twit got five silouettes of himself overlaid onto the photo. Needed to get the truck back for a second go. Not a mistake you make twice! It's the contrast between the bike and its environment that makes this art, rather than a Harley ad. Getting such photographic quality into both grunge and gleam in the same shot is real craftsmanship. And dedication to getting it perfect. Thank you for sharing it with us.
