Description
After a nineteen-hour flight I had finally reached my destination, Poppies Cottages. I checked in, found my cottage and collapsed on the bed. Exploring would have to wait for the next day.
Not the most interesting pictures but I wanted to tell you about Poppies. By the time of my visit it had become the place for backpackers. If you had money you headed up the coast to Sanur with its fancy hotels and Western style comforts. Kuta in those days was for the young and the broke.
A young Balinese woman named Zenik Sukenny had founded Poppies Restaurant and Cottages with the help of several expatriates from California. The name Poppies was taken from a defunct restaurant that had been owned by two of the Americans. It had been named after the California state flower. Cottages were $5 American per night. A meal of sweet and sour tuna steak with vegetables and salad and a piƱa colada would set you back $1.50. By the time of my next visit in 1987 a very nice swimming pool had been added and the old cottages had been replaced with more luxurious accommodations including Western style bathrooms with, I am not kidding you, a garden in the bathroom.
You can find more about Poppies history and pictures of what the cottages look like today at:

thank you for bringing memories back, when time have to go through my slide (no digicam then ;-) which shows very similar bungalows. after this, as i was twice a year for 6-8 weeks in Bali i rented a small room where only locals live (in Kerobokan a few km away from Kuta) for 160 Euros/year. Now the kids don't let me go for that long abd it only 5-6 weeks in Indonesia per year. Balinese friends of mine (thanky you Made & Meka Rena) let me stay now since years in a huge room in the first floor of their house anytime I am in Bali. This is where my Gecko friend lives..... will follow you report with great interest

Very interesting narrative and great to have the pictures to go with it. It looks like Zenik kept it nice, bright and cheerful. Thanks for the link. I imagine you slept well. Just like hunger is the best sauce, exhaustion makes most beds comfortable.
