Description

Fort Meade, Md. Taken a few years back with my camera phone. I'd been hearing rumors that a U-boat captain was buried here, but I'd assumed it was just a local 'legend.' Here is the grave of Korventenkapitan Werner Henke. He is the senior PoW in the plot. There are about 17 total. Mostly German army and two Italians -- presumably army. Werner is definitely worth a google. I was shocked to see that about 25% of the cemetary is the graves of infants who died, often one-day old, in the early 1950's. A little quick figuring makes me think this is probably a refelection of the last polio epedemic which struck about that time -- during the Korean War. Some spouses are also here, and I will post a few more images ... not being morbid, but I found the inscriptions, etc. extremely interesting in terms of what the Army, then, thought was the appropriate way to memorialize the interred. Nothing disrespectful; just ... different. Oh yes, the ribbon. I've learned that a delegation meets here once a year on Germany's remembrance day. Staff from the German embassy hold a service at Werner's grave. I'd like to have caught that, but getting access to the fort's grounds is not as easy as it once was thanks to 9/11. Enjoy? Well, thanks for viewing.

If you found Civil War graves there, you'll see that Union markers have a curved top, like the one in this photograph, and Confederate markers have a pointed top. They would be marked "CSA." Graveyards are so fascinating!

There are many stories in each graveyard.
