Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

Ah a groovy lady, then she must be a rare find to be sure. Too few these days. My grand mother, a snow bird, used to talk at length of the pelicans in Florida. Apparently, they were always trying to mooch off her regardless of whether she had any food. When you put this together with their looks, I guess one might call them 'old campaigners'. Warriors always on the look out for the next inn (or senior) as they tread the road to glory. Which neatly brings us to this moment...

Ah Groovy? eh? Why thank you old brother, me chap :) Funny how southern california looks nothing like the english countryside......sorry austin powers flashback- Thanks for the birthday wishes Corey! I wish the day had been spent in much more creative mode but unforutnately it was spent dealing with home repair - iiiccchkkkkk- so we will have to celebrate in the uncoming weekend and I love your narrative and pelicans really do look like Jimmy Durante - made me giggle as usual. Here's to a rockin great brother!

I kept looking for this pelican's head...then I realized it was on the other end;-) Laughed at your narrative. Happy Birthday Kate. Sounds like it was a great trip. Is it true that everybody in Chicago moves to Florida after some certain age? It must be the double freezing winters on the shores of Lake Michigan.

I can certainly see why Kate liked this image! VERY cool. Loads of action, perfect timing on the snap, good use of blank space, and heck ... it's a pelican! LOL! Happy Birthday, Kate! :D

I like pelicans too. They're kinda like pterodactyls with feathers, and a bit of attitude, not that I'd know anything of that. I love the title, and this is a perfect birthday dedication. And after reading Bill's comment, I think that a lot of Chicagoans move to Florida because of the shape...it sort of hangs down into the Gulf Of Mexico in the same way that Lake Michigan just sort of hangs down, breaking Michigan into two parts. But that's a rant for another day. And I agree that this is a groovy shot for a groovy person. Happy Birthday Kate!

Fabulous capture Corey and after a controlled crash - they still manage to muster the energy to take off and fly away. Dana
