Description

There were many pictures (too many?) made on the recent trip my sister Kate (Kateblack10) and I took to Florida to see our parents, earlier this month. So many, in fact , (over 700), that I'm having a difficult time sorting through them in a timely manner. And then I misplaced about half of them, (which I still haven't found), and then there were the never ending doctors appointments, phone calls to Medicaid, and the usual bla bla bla. Hence, I haven't posted in a week, and am WAY behind in my comments Bare with me, I will get to you...eventually. Anyway, the trip was a blast, we all had a good time, and I got to see how much Venice, Florida has changed in the three and a half years since I was last down there: not very much. It was an action packed six days, and over much too soon. One afternoon, while Dad was at work, Kate, Mom and I went to The Jetty at Nokomis Beach to have a gander (groan) at the pelicans. And few things say "FLORIDA" quite like pelicans. In fact, the only things that say "FLORIDA" louder than pelicans, to me, are palm trees and pink plastic flamingo lawn ornaments. If you want my opinion (always a dubious proposition), pelicans are basically swans with a thyroid condition that were designed by a committee of vacuum cleaner engineers. How shall I put this delicately: they're funny looking. However, being the Jimmy Durante of waterfowl is not without it's subtle charms: they stand out in a crowd; you don't have to squint to see them congregating in the tree tops; they look really cool when they swoop down to grab things out of the water with their giant beaks; and they probably wouldn't look unusual smoking cigars. Anyway, this is an action shot of one of them doing that nifty dive bomber thing. Today is Kate's birthday. How do you describe your sister in public without running on too long and becoming embarrassing? You basically just state the obvious: she's pretty groovy. She had mentioned once that she liked this picture, so I thought I'd dedicate it to her. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KATE!!

Ah a groovy lady, then she must be a rare find to be sure. Too few these days. My grand mother, a snow bird, used to talk at length of the pelicans in Florida. Apparently, they were always trying to mooch off her regardless of whether she had any food. When you put this together with their looks, I guess one might call them 'old campaigners'. Warriors always on the look out for the next inn (or senior) as they tread the road to glory. Which neatly brings us to this moment...

Ah Groovy? eh? Why thank you old brother, me chap :) Funny how southern california looks nothing like the english countryside......sorry austin powers flashback- Thanks for the birthday wishes Corey! I wish the day had been spent in much more creative mode but unforutnately it was spent dealing with home repair - iiiccchkkkkk- so we will have to celebrate in the uncoming weekend and I love your narrative and pelicans really do look like Jimmy Durante - made me giggle as usual. Here's to a rockin great brother!

I kept looking for this pelican's head...then I realized it was on the other end;-) Laughed at your narrative. Happy Birthday Kate. Sounds like it was a great trip. Is it true that everybody in Chicago moves to Florida after some certain age? It must be the double freezing winters on the shores of Lake Michigan.

I can certainly see why Kate liked this image! VERY cool. Loads of action, perfect timing on the snap, good use of blank space, and heck ... it's a pelican! LOL! Happy Birthday, Kate! :D

I like pelicans too. They're kinda like pterodactyls with feathers, and a bit of attitude, not that I'd know anything of that. I love the title, and this is a perfect birthday dedication. And after reading Bill's comment, I think that a lot of Chicagoans move to Florida because of the shape...it sort of hangs down into the Gulf Of Mexico in the same way that Lake Michigan just sort of hangs down, breaking Michigan into two parts. But that's a rant for another day. And I agree that this is a groovy shot for a groovy person. Happy Birthday Kate!

Fabulous capture Corey and after a controlled crash - they still manage to muster the energy to take off and fly away. Dana
