Description

Sequoia National Park, California. From Wikipedia: "The General Sherman is a Giant Sequoia with a height of 83.8 metres (275 ft). As of 2002, the volume of its trunk measured about 1,487 cubic metres (52,513 cu ft), making it the largest known non-clonal tree by volume. The tree is located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in the United States, east of Visalia, California. The tree is believed to be between 2,300 and 2,700 years old. In January 2006 the largest branch on the tree (seen most commonly, in older photos, as an "L" or golf-club shape, protruding from about a quarter of the way down the trunk) broke off. There were no witnesses to the incident, but the branch—with a bigger circumference than the trunks of most trees, a diameter of over 2 m (6 feet) and a length of over 30 m (100 feet)—smashed part of its enclosing fence and cratered the pavement of the walkway surrounding the sequoia. The breakage, however, is not believed to be indicative of any abnormalities in the tree's health, and may even be a natural defense mechanism against adverse weather conditions.[7] The branch loss did not change the General Sherman's status as the largest tree, as its size has been calculated using measurements of trunk volume, excluding branches." I include this information because it's so difficult to express it's size with a mere photo but you may notice the people gathered at the base of the tree. Thank y'all for takin' a look and thanks to my dentist for, kinda, takin' it easy on me today! Manning

Have recently returned from a visit to the Redwoods in Northern California's Humbolt County. Your picture grabbed my attention right away. And yes...it is so difficult to get a real sense of the enormity of a tree like this. May it stand 1000 more years:)

These trees are stunning! I know exactly what you mean about trying to portray the size of these trees. So beautiful :)

I can't recall in which park I saw redwoods when I lived in Oakland years ago, but they are impressive. Great shot of this giant~ we are lucky some were saved, so many were cut down.
