Description

Bali is an island of small towns and villages but Yogyakarta is a big city. As with any city Yogya, as it is affectionately known, has certain amenities you will not find in rural areas. There is rapid transit as provided by my friend Rubio. As with most (pedi)cab drivers Rubio knew where everything was and I spent many hours discovering the city with him. Some westerners would not use pedicabs. They considered them degrading and a vestige of colonialism. I soon realized, however, that this was the work available to Rubio and he depended upon it to support his wife and two children. He performed his duties with an unusual aura of dignity and I used his services as much as I could. Though I didn’t have a lot of money I always insisted on overpaying him. Another luxury found in the city is the Laundromat. It’s very efficient but you’d best keep an eye out for sudden rain showers during the dry cycle. The big blue towel with the white border is mine and I still have it. Of course, if you are stepping out one evening on that big date you don’t want to look like a homeless person. A haircut and a shave are just the things to make you look your best.

How amazing it must be to live in a country that's warm enough to consider the out-of-doors to be living space! With all the rain and chilly weather we get here, it's a treat to be outside. I love sun-dried towels, but it's not something that happens often! LOL! The idea of a barber setting up shop under a tree is ... foreign!
