Description

My thoughts, on my month, in Scotland: The people were amazing! So helpful, willing to show the way and offering rides to a stranger. As I mentioned before, the Pubs were a big surprise for meeting locals, friendly service, hints on where to go and the best way to get there. The train system beats every aspect of the US train system and again I met so many wonderful people. I used the trains from Glasgow, Scotland to London. I hiked the length of Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands and would recommend it. I also tried to hike across Rannock Moor. The book said it was 20 sq miles (52 Sq km) and I was forced to give in and go back. It is a mass of peat bogs, underground streams, small locks (lakes), boulders, tree stumps, mud holes and all the dark brown areas in my posting – are dead and petrified brush that tears jeans and flesh like razor blades. My only disappointment was a canoe trip on the famous Loch Lomond where I saw abandoned castles and medieval style homes that had fallen into disrepair and should be or maybe have been condemned. I hope that you enjoyed my photo trip and it pains me that I did not have todays digital camera to have provided a proper view. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

It looks like you had a good time in Scotland Dana, Rannock Moor sure looks an inhospitable place and its no wonder you gave up some of the bogs are very dangerous. You will have to come back to the UK and try England and Wales.

Thank you so much for sharing your 'story' of being in Scotland. Great pictures again. You can get lost there, I suppose. I would love the silence which is going out from these views/landscape.

Great captures Dana and fantastic scans and background info. I went to Scotland in early fall 1988 (got a Highland Pass that enabled me unlimited travel by rail, bus, or ferry for the duration of the pass), took the 125 from Kings Crossing to Waverley Station, Edinburgh and on by train to Inverness, buss to Ullapool, ferry across the North Minch to Stornoway,Isle of Lewis, back to Inverness. Train to Kyle of Lochalsh, bus some parts on Skye, ferry to Mallaig, train to Fort Williams and train to Oban, Glasgow back to Edinburgh. I agree with you on the people, friendly and helpful Just don't make the mistake and mention that you are in England. I took off in London on Britrail and wound up in Scotland on Scotrail. Same with the money, despite the fact that the bills had the image of the queen of it, they were issued by the Bank of Scotland in Scotland , or by the Bank of England, respectively. I too wished I had a digital camera.

Oh, desolation runs rampant in this sepiatone-like collage of Rannock Moor, Dana. Splendid series you have posted, captured in amazing color and detail in re your trip to Scotland. Unfortunately, no photos of a real live Loch Ness Monster.
