Description

This is a rocky hill over which the wagon trains heading west had to pass. The rut in the rock was formed by countless feet of humans, their animals and the wagons. This was near the junction of the rivers Platte and Laramie in Wyoming. How they must have suffered!! The trail was blazed in the 1840's. Happy birthday to Dana. (danapommet).

There must have been huge numbers passing over this track for it to be worn down so much and it looks so bumpy too. We don't know how lucky we are with our roads. An excellent capture.

I've seen a few bits and pieces of the trail too...quite a quiet memorial to our ancesters. Promises of free land and a better life are huge motivators.

That's a hell of a lot of people to gorge out a rut that size! Wonderful shot Jeff!!

Beautiful and dramatic shot! Excellent composition and POV. I can feel the sun beating down, the endlessly long vistas, and the hard rocky ground. One of the first books of diaries, I read was "Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey" by Lillian Schlissel. It is a fascinating read, sometimes for what they didn't write as well as what they did. In the introduction Schlissel wrote, "The severity of the dislocation of the journey can be gauged in the knowledge that about one of every five overland women was seized by some stage of pregnancy, and virtually every married woman traveled with small children." ... "It is in women's diaries that we are reminded that the heaviest emigration of the Overland Trail was accomplished during the years of cholera epidemic."
