Description

Dana uploaded a picture similar to this on the 12th which was taken in 1996 and its a great feeling to have stood in his footsteps 15 years later and captured this. We live thousands of miles apart and have only met through this RR medium. The picture is of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River in North Arizona. The lake created is called Lake Powell after an explorer who explored the river in 1886. Happy birthday Dana. Jeff.

That is interesting that you were almost in the same spot, not quite because we cannot see the blockade at this end of the short stub road. Dana was only a few feet closer to that edge. I also noticed the water level in his shot was quite a lot higher. It might be interesting to compare the plants and small rocks in both shots.

A photographer named Eliot Porter "one of my major influences" put a book out on glenn canyon in protest to this dam they flooded an extremely beautiful canyon, another great loss to progress.

Well, it's a small world to make friends, isn't it? A great picture it is, Jeff, I wonder why the cars are placed sideways on the dam. Happy birthday Dana! btw Yesterday I met one American member here on RR, which has lived a couple of streets away from our house. Amazing!

Great POV and capture! The water level is much lower in your shot, makes a nice contrast between them. :)

Fine photo Jeff. And Happy BD to you Dana:) I've always been for progress, renewable energy and all that sort of thing but I have joined the I don't like dams crowd...destruction of beautiful rivers and valleys...vastly diminished salmon runs. I read recently where there are 75,000 dams in the USA...many are obsolete and far too expensive to repair. Some 475 dams have actually been removed over the past 10-20 years with tremendously positive results. So, pardon my blah, blah, blah...but give me an inch and I'll take a mile when I can:-)

This is a tremendous birthday card Jeff. Yours is a fantastic capture and the water level is lower, than in my shot, to expose more of the red sandstone. I love it and it is a wonderful feeling to have stood in the exact spot and then to have met here at RR. Thanks for the birthday wishes and more importantly – your friendship. Dana
