Description

It's been a while, but I haven't given up yet :). I've been learning some new software, and tried out Marvelous Designer, which is even more marvelous than the name suggests. It's been a long dream of mine to create an image in the British New-Classical style, but with some twists. However, up until now, the lack of properly draped realistically Neo-Classical cloth has been a serious obstacle. I really didn't feel like modeling all those folds by hand. Not to mention that I don't think my modeling could ever come anywhere close to the realistic effect I was looking for. Well, I finally got my chance to create the image. On a second try with Marvelous Designer, too. The first one was also quite successful, but didn't have all the belts on top, which I wanted to include for greater resemblance to the original painting I was inspired by. I modeled and draped the cloth in MD, and then everything else was done in Carrara, which was a really easy seamless process work-flow-wise. I love the relaxed ease of poses in Godward's paintings, but I don't think modern world allows for such lazily passive lifestyle, so in my modern take on the style, I incorporated a more active pastime for the model, and threw a bit of magic into the mix, as a nod to the modern-day genre I find to be a most similar equivalent to Godward's. (In popular appeal and realistic portrayal of not-so-realistic realities.) Critique is always welcome. I'd love to hear interpretations, thoughts, and associations you may have, as well as your evaluation of the technical aspects and suggestions for improvement. Thank you!

I love this! It has such a beautiful old world feel but with that decidedly modern twist. Everything comes together so nicely with the fabric of her dress, the lighting and pose. I've been thinking about doing a classic homage, too. Good job!

Lovely composition and I think you have done a bag up job with MD... especially if this is your second effort with it. I haven't opened mine yet, but sure hope I have the luck you have had with it when I finally get started. I'll look up on on the forum. Anyway, one of the other things I like about this is the more natural weight you have given her arms. I don't really do figures... probably because I'm tired of all the Babe pictures... so this is a pleasure to see. Keep up the good work!

she is stunning and beautiful. I like the color and composition and good job kicking butt with MD! The small critiques (take with grain of salt) I have are: 1) This image deserves grit and grime painted into to corners of the floor, and the marble is too clean. Same with leaves and pillars. 2) I'd have liked to have seen her start to turn towards us and given her a 1/4 or 1/2 profile instead of the full profile. This would have engaged us with her a little more. The posing of hands, foot, etc is super - just wishing the head was turning to us (and I could be wrong, it might not even work that way). 3) I'd have like less ambient light and seen more shadows to help bring out the forms of the fruit and the woman and folds - and painted the deeper folds pure black. It is easy to critique such a nice work, because it deserves to be more!!!! I am envious of your skills and am looking forward to your next work.

having dabbled in MD myself I have to say I am impressed (a lot) :D As you know I am in no position to comment on the artistic side of what is right or wrong. But for me moving to camera toward the right, turning left might have made a more interesting image. Which is what was said above, making contact with the face more. I wouldn't turn her head just move the camera. But hey another superb image Antaran. You rock

You wanted to create an image in the British New-Classical style? You succeed. I immediatly thought about Sir Alma Tadema's paintings when I see the compo. Of course, his paintings had not so bright colours... I never heard about John William Godward before I read your comment. Now, I know who he was!
