Description

...reference my upload of, "Longer Than Tallest Building", from Thursday, August 18th, [Click Here]. ...here's that same Maersk Line container ship an hour later in position to be offloaded in the Port of Seattle. ...although this image is very busy, hopefully you can see that giant ships now are loaded and offloaded by huge cranes and very few men in a matter of hours,...some difference from the days when hundreds of stevedores were needed to do what for hundreds of years was a very labor intensive task. Bill P.S. Very much worth a zoom. "Not About the Plane" thumb_2238094.jpg

Wonderful followup shot; it may be busy, but that's what a harbour is, a busy workplace. It must be hard to dock a building like that, it's not like it can stop on a dime or anything!

At first I thought it the harbor in Södertälje (south of Stockholm), but everything's much bigger! Those aren't Toyota passenger cars in the foreground but huge containers! Yes, the stevedores had a dreadfully dangerous job. Much less so today with the modern cranes. I see small variants of such cranes loading/unloading rail cars in Malmö railyard every day. Impressive how much they can load/unload in a day. Impressive that you could get so close so fast soas to get the ship in dock. From this angle the harbor looks a mess to find one's way around in. Good job! :-)

Wow, detail galore in this busy shot, Bill, and sharp at that. Kind of reminds me of the docks in southern England bulging with tons of equipment prior to D-Day in June 1944.

This is really an amazing shot, Bill! When you stop and realize that each of those boxes is the size of a small house, it really gives you a feel for the immensity of this scene! That ship is HUGE - and man, that's a lot of boxes! This is one of those photos I could spend a good long time looking at - so much detail! Yep - modern day stevedores sit in an airconditioned cab with computer cotrols for those gigantic cranes. Suppose they have computer parts in one of those boxes?? :-D Fantastic shot!

You captured the activity very well Bill. Its amazing how little time it takes nowadays to off-load a freighter.

Super shot of the dock area. It is amazing to watch the unloading of a container ship. As a kid, I unloaded fresh fish, from the bowls of fishing boats, with a pitchfork, into huge canvas bags, that were winched up to waiting dump trucks. They called us lumpers. Dana

I've got a shot of those kinds of large cranes taken in New York City, I plan to post at some time. Fascinating image! Such a hive of activity. Wonderful to see the ship right up there near the cranes and still full of stacked cargo. I like the layers and the relatively limited palette of colors, mostly red, blue, and white. Excellent shot!
