Description

Carefully, she inspects her hair and makeup in the mirror, preparing for the night's entertainment in the tea house. All is well and all that is left to do is to put on her expensive, but beautiful silk kimono she has purchased just for this purpose. For this she will have help from the other members of the okiya where she lives. This image is one I've wanted to do for a long time, but didn't have the models or textures till now. The hair and kimono are freebies from sharecg. The kimono is conforming, but I converted it to a dynamic cloth for easier posing. Not as easy as I thought it might be, as the sleeves needed many frames to settle like I wanted. I still had to do some touch-up with the morph brush to smooth some places out. The sleeves are not open like a robe, just an opening for the hands which made it a little harder for them to settle down in the right positions. Still for some reason, the right sleeve screwed up a bit somehow and looks like it wrapped around her arm twice. I had opted to have the sim ignore her hands, so that may be why. I might try to take the object into Hex and open the sleeves up to see if that helps. For the sim dynamics controls, I used values for heavy silk from a tutorial at SmithMicro found here: http://my.smithmicro.com/tutorials/2313.html This helped speed up the sim, as before some frames would take several hundred steps before moving to the next frame! I didn't like the textures that came with the kimono, so I applied a freebie fabric shader by Tabala. I wasn't sure how it would look, but I think it looks beautiful! I also like the way it slipped just a bit on her right shoulder. Offsite Credits: Fujiko @ sharecg for the Oiran hair and the little dresser she is using (he has other Oiran (high class geisha) accessories there, including a bath prop!) Fenric also @ sharecg for the kimono

The lighting feels a little bit flat to me, but otherwise this is a fantastic image. Beautiful character and great work with the dynamics of the kimono.

Really nice image. I rather like geishas (there are actually male ones too,) especially since they're so misunderstood in the west. I also learned that any geisha worth the prices she charges must be able to do a decent cover of Elvis Presley songs! She should also be able to eat without smearing her lipstick. I love little details like that. Okay, none of that has anything to do with this image, and yet, there are similarities and connections. I really like your use of light in this and the little details you add to keep things as realistic as possible...I also like the fact she's undressed...no outer kimono, no obi, no tabi on her feet; her face hasn't even been powdered yet...but the face powder thing is optional. 21st Century geishas look more like modern gals anyway, but they can still serve a complicated cup of tea with any of the old school ladies. There's a rawness in seeing a geisha not yet all geisha'd up. This is quite nice.
