Description
The sea otter (taken at the Monterey Aquarium, California) is a marine mammal native to the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. Adult sea otters typically weigh between 30 to 100 pounds (14 and 45 kg), making them the heaviest members of the weasel family, but among the smallest marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, the sea otter's primary form of insulation is an exceptionally thick coat of fur, the densest in the animal kingdom. Although it can walk on land, the sea otter lives mostly in the ocean.
The sea otter inhabits near shore environments where it dives to the sea floor to forage. It preys mostly upon marine invertebrates such as sea urchins, various mollusks and crustaceans. Male sea otters usually are 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) in length. Females measure 3 feet 3 inches to 4 feet 7 inches (1.0 to 1.4 meters) in length. Still cleaning out my odds and ends folder. I love these little creatures; they seem so gentle! However, at my uncle's place at Priest Lake, Idaho, a neighbor and his child were chased and bitten by an otter, and have to undergo the rabies treatment since they haven't been able to catch the otter for testing. I never heard of anything like that attack before!
