Description

The sea otter (taken at the Monterey Aquarium, California) is a marine mammal native to the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. Adult sea otters typically weigh between 30 to 100 pounds (14 and 45 kg), making them the heaviest members of the weasel family, but among the smallest marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, the sea otter's primary form of insulation is an exceptionally thick coat of fur, the densest in the animal kingdom. Although it can walk on land, the sea otter lives mostly in the ocean. The sea otter inhabits near shore environments where it dives to the sea floor to forage. It preys mostly upon marine invertebrates such as sea urchins, various mollusks and crustaceans. Male sea otters usually are 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) in length. Females measure 3 feet 3 inches to 4 feet 7 inches (1.0 to 1.4 meters) in length. Still cleaning out my odds and ends folder. Info from Wikipedia. Old photo scanned. Zoom works. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

What I really like about these Otters, is especially - when they are floating so luxuriously on their backs without a care in the world - or so it seems! superb Dana, BB

Great capture of this unusual marine animal, Dana. Also interesting about these animals - they have a great impact on the fish fry since they (the otter) secure the big seaweed forests from being devoured by just their normal prey: sea urchins and mollusks. Then the fish fry have a place to hide until they grow up (and get caught by man!). The Sea Otter was once close to extinction but are in progress now again. So this guy and his kind are valuable! :o)
