Description

Well first off, I was going to make my usual montage for you, Denise, but decided instead to return to my first art (drawing). Actually it took the same amount of time, because I haven't drawn in ages, lol, but I drew for a special reason. (Also it's done on a Wacom because my scanner died. But I did it with pencil & nothing else, so it's almost as if I'd done it on real paper...)
Why did I make a drawing?
Because you have the most magical sense of intimacy & closeness in your work. We know you take beautiful photos of so many things...parks, yards, ponds, birds, benches, etc. And huge machines, smokestacks, sewer-covers, Seattle-scapes, etc. I can't think of a subject you haven't taken to... But you do it all with such embrace, your eye 'hugs' what you see. You can do a small corner of a yard, yet---in your hands---it blooms, it glows as if it were putting on its best for you. You make parks & benches glow like old dear friends, small ponds shimmer like little worlds: Your pov's turn the universe upside-down so you present a whole forest in a reflection: a large forest, seen in still waters, graced with lily pads---like frosting!---and no forest: The forest is in the water, period. That's all it needs. You make a magisterial landscape into the private dream-of-a-pond. And you make a front door, a few stones & some moss into a mini-countryside. It's a gathering of revelations for dear friends. To me, your work is filled with love; it's dear & very generous. Which why I made a drawing after months of not lifting a pencil: Not because my drawing is 'special' (you don't wanna know what I went through for that little thing!) but because I wanted to make it one-on-one, better, one to one, because that's how your work feels. Happy birthday Denise, and thanks for gracing us with such beautiful & intimate work. It's a true gift to have a pass to your world...
* * * I didn't get to your galleries 'cause I was finishing this flower! I'll return to you all, this week. Peace & inspiration Mark (PS: Denise's gallery is here)

This rose is the perfect image for Denise. It is intimate and symbolizes love in such a beautiful simple way. And yet there is more, as I see all kinds of things within your rose drawing, a wolf on its back, dolphins swimming, making this creation even more than first meets the eye. Simple on the surface, and complex the deeper you go. As always, Mark, your dedications are very special, so heartfelt, and a gift to all of us. CC

Marvellous! And such a wonderful description of Denise and her work. She is one of the few people from RR I've met in the flesh, so I have first-hand experience of the lady herself!

OH GOSH! It is gorgeous Mark. The deep shades the beautiful highlight, the soft curves and the sharp edges. All in this little lovely rose. Nobody can see you havenĀ“t been drawing for ages. You went right into it, as if you have done it all the time. You simply got it in you. :))) A wonderful dedication...........Happy Birthday Denise.

Mark, first of all let me say that this is easily one of the best gifts anyone could hope to get for their birthday. Just looking at the detailing of this flower and knowing the care that went into producing it is something. The beautiful and expressive nature of your art really comes out in your drawings. This flower is almost opening itself to the world and showering everyone with good tidings.

This is just beautiful, Mark. What a lovely and loving gift! The detail and subtlety of shading, the shapes and balance of dark and light, are wonderful little bursts of delight when viewing this full size. I sat with this drawing for a while and thoroughly enjoyed seeing your hand at work. A perfect gift for Denise. You have echoed her artistic vibe, even in this wholly different medium, and it absolutely sings!

This is absolutely gorgeous and it's a perfect dedication! I smiled when I first saw it, realizing that Denise would probably see (and appreciate) the intricate design; she has such an eye for that, and I love that this is done by hand. I love the delicate lines, the sweeping curves, the angles, the wholly organic look. I especially like the way this single blossom looks as if it's emerging from the background, almost like a kind of multi-dimensional origami flower folding itself out of nothing; that I think would constitute a miracle as origami flowers aren't in the habit of folding themselves out of nothing! This is quite marvelous and--as always--incredibly perfect.

Whether from life, from a photo or from memory, this is superb. I'd like to know sometime what you do base a drawing like this upon... There is so much practised technique here. I think I have (or had) an art book on pencil drawing that belonged to my dad. I'd like to do a little studying on that subject one day. What am I waiting for? ...I recall my dad had an artist's box of pencils, several little handheld sanding pads and a large portfolio of drawings. When I reduced my houseful of stuff to 13 medium sized boxes, I am not sure what I did with all of those neat things. Anyway, your drawing for Denise is all of the things you said, Tara said and Chip said. Again, I am back to looking at how you've handled light and dark...fascinating...and a direct tie to many of those things you recognize and speak about in photography. Well done Mark!

Stellar impromptu drawing done, following adverse scanner conditions, for our dear friend, Denise, Mark! With my pesky essential tremor, no way could I do a hand drawing. Plus, a fine texted tribute under the image, so well deserved. Everything you said about her is true. And, at least you received more comments vis-a-vis MrsRatbag's birthday commemoration than my dedication did. Where is everybody?

A super drawing of this rose for Denise, I am sure she will love this as it is a very special gift. You have captured the essence of the rose here too with your drawing which is so hard to do as I have tried many times with no luck. Excellent work.

This flower, a rose, is a wonder, Mark. What incredible play between darkness and light, with such subtlety that she looks like she was colour, because so many tones and how they blend...is a magical view of a rose and has the mistery that roses have, more yet, given the way she emerges from the white sheet.. still, she seems to have the touch of velvet, or silk or like the soft skin of a baby...It is marvelous!!!and a wonderful dedi for Denise!Happy Birthday Denise, again!

Again, I'm blown away not only by your incredible skill and talent, but by the love you pour into your art - both for the people you create for, and for the art itself. This is outstanding (and very moving).
