Description

Sometimes I have the most fun by simply opening Photoshop, and starting out with a fill of random noise, or sometimes random-cloud and then noise... Whenever I do it I can be sure that whatever I set out to make won't bear much resemblance to the final piece, and if I try to stay too close to my original goal it almost always ends badly. This one had the benefit of not having a plan at all, which I think is probably the best way to approach this kind of thing. I just started mucking around, adding layers and effects, trying whatever popped into my head just to see what it would do. There's not a single actual photograph in this at all, just lots of randomness and filters. You learn so much from accidents and "Gee, what would happen if I tried this?" kind of things when making abstracts and textures in Photoshop. Eventually I thought "That is starting to look like an old wall or something" so I hopped over to Illustrator to make a grid of blocks, dropped that back into Photoshop as an overlay, and after deciding it needed aging and wear I started modifying duplicates of those blocks with various filters. I can't even begin to list all of them because I have no idea, anymore. Still, the effect is kind of interesting to me. Perhaps this will end up as a texture on some 3D model in one of my Bryce creations, someday. Thanks for taking a look!

This is a perfect example of what us adult sorts of humans lose sight of far too often; we learn by playing, but somewhere along the line, someone came up with the really bad idea of avoiding play. As a result of that, they doomed humanity to centuries of boredom and the banging of heads against apparently insurmountable obstacles...but through play, we learn so much more, especially in art, where play with "dangerous" ideas can be safe. After all, you can't go "what happens if I do this?" on a crowded highway, or in your cubicle/designated space at work, but with Photoshop (or in my case, the Gimp) it's simple to take chances with filters and/or layers: and look at the result! This could be photographic in nature, and it offers numerous possibilities as art in-and-of itself as well as a component for something else! That's a part of what I like about this; the other part is that it's so much fun to look at, especially since I was searching desperately for hints and whispers of the photographic source of this image, a photographic source that isn't actually there...how wonderful!

You know, I would pay real money to have enough spare time to just take a whole day, and sit down with Photoshop, a good pot of coffee, and just explore and experiment like this - this is pure art and pure relaxation! I love this kind of stuff! A wonderful result, Mike, and what a killer texture this would make for an old dungeon, or the inside of an old stone barn, or ancient building. Brilliant, my friend!
