Description
Aka, Lories.
Just five out of a total of 44 pics I took on 8/3/11 of the colorful avians, at the beautiful Lorikeet Forest on the grounds of the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific in beautiful Long Beach, California.
ZOOM worthy.
What's this, birds in an aquarium? Well sure, anything goes in California.
The main reason I returned to the Aquarium for the third time was to photograph not only the Lionfish, but also these winged beauties, which are far easier to snap than fish swimming about in a darkened environment. There are approximately 140 of the lories in the enclosure. One has the choice, on entry, of purchasing small cups of the birdie's favorite nectar so as to spoil them more than they already are. The Aquarium has them on a regular diet of berry and melon smoothies.
------------------
Lories and lorikeets are small to medium-sized arboreal parrots characterized by their specialized brush-tipped tongues for feeding on nectar and soft fruits. The species form a monophyletic group within the parrot family Psittacidae. Traditionally, they were considered one of the two subfamilies in that family (Loriinae), the other being the subfamily Psittacinae, but new insights show that it is placed in the middle of various other groups. To date, this issue has not been resolved scientifically. They are widely distributed throughout the Australasian region, including south-eastern Asia, Polynesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Australia, and the majority have very brightly coloured plumage.
With their specialized brush-tipped tongues, they can feed from the flowers of about 5,000 species of plants. They have tapered wings and pointed tails that allow them to fly easily and display great agility, along with strong feet and legs. The Lorikeets tend to be hyperactive and clownish in personality both in captivity and the wild.

Super captures of these beautiful little birds. We missed out on having them here so I love to see them when I go to visit my son and daughter in Perth, Australia. I will never forget seeing hundreds of them all chattering in a tree one day. It was an amazing colourful sight.

I am so familiar with them, as they come and visit me - we call them also Rosellas - they make terrible screeching sounds, when they get totally 'drunk'on the berries of the Umbrella tree plant and hanging upside down. Hilarious actually ! BB

Wonderful images! Great details and bright colors. The first is my favorite. I agree with Dana, the bird in the first shot looks disgruntled. I love the detail of the feathers on his head and the soft plushy look of the orange feathers on his breast. The second two look like they are asking you a question. The difference in the chest feathers from the first one is interesting. I like the highlights reflecting off of the left ones head. I like the stretched out one in the third image. I like his pose and lighting. The eye looks really cool on the one on the right. The forth image makes me think of guys hanging out with nothing to do. Wonderful detail of the feathers on the last one. They are all terrific shots!
