Description

This is only part of the rocket garden at the Kennedy Space Center. Far left is a Mercury/Atlas rocket used to launch early Mercury capsules. The red tip is an emergency rocket to eject the capsule in case of rocket launch problems. 2nd from left is an Atlas/Thor rocket with an Agena upper stage for launching satellites into orbit. 3rd from left is a Mercury/Redstone rocket and this was the predecessor to the Atlas/Thor rocket. The next rocket (with the Qtip look) was a luna moon vehicle (I think)with no name plate. The NASA unit did not have a name plate but looks like a very early rocket. Far right is a Jupiter C/Redstone rocket with a dummy satellite on top. Bottom far right is a single Saturn 5 engine, just one of the five engines in last nights posting. For perspective, there is a group of people behind the engine. Info from Wikipedia. Zoom will help a lot! Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Stellar shot of this beautiful missile/rocket lineup, Dana, which brings back fond memories for me when I was working in the aerospace industry.

Ooh I didn't realise they had a rocket garden at the center. How marvellous and what a great capture.

The thing that impresses me the most is the truly massive size of that bell thruster on the right. That is one monstrously large piece of machinery, positively dwarfed by the big, explosive thing it's intended to push into outer space by the sheer force of...well...a very loud, sustained and controlled boom. It's unfortunate that our Space Program is so incredibly misguided and probably closer to extinction than we care to admit. There's so much potential involved, but alas, politicians and non-science, not-that-smart types are in control of stuff like this and look where it's gone...we have to hitch rides to the International Space Station: ironically, on Russian transport vehicles. I find that rather hilarious, though Russian cosmonauts do look kinda sexy in a retro-cosmonaut sort of way. Now, if only the ISS was in a higher (useful) orbit and able to do something other than pay for itself, barely, by its novelty value and a few scientific experiments that don't do too much to boost anyone's economy or scientific knowledge...but hey, at least we've got nice space telescopes and un-crewed probes that are helping in their way, to push understanding of the true expansiveness of Nature...because when all is said and done, Nature is a universal presence and we'd be much better off understanding all of it, rather than the limited dribs and drabs we understand now...ah, but I'm rambling, as is common. This is a great shot and I love the sheer scale of this.

I got quite a thrill when I opened this image! I love the lines of the rockets looking up into space. I wish we allotted more of our annual budget to exploring space. While the amount seems large on the face of it, it is not a large percentage of the whole. If the Doctor (the time traveler from the show "Dr Who")came to give me a ride on the TARDIS, I would be tempted to ask to visit the past because I love history. But I think I would ask to be shown some sites from deep space instead. I'd love to live in a time where travel among the stars was as common as a plane trip from Texas to NYC is today. Wonderful shot and interesting information! I'd love to visit this in person.
