Description

I hadn't planned to post anything like this, tonight. In fact, I have a number of projects in the works that I'd thought might be ready to post, but then THIS happened. The scale of this is impossible to really show, alas. This amazing lady has spun the most spectacular web on our back porch. The web spans at least 3 feet wide (roughly a meter) and has to be at least twice that in height. And she sits boldly directly in the middle, right at eye-level when you go out the back door. I didn't post this in Macros because this isn't really a macro shot, it's just a huge spider on an even bigger web. You really have to see this full size, because the spider is just as spectacular as her web: spikey and colorful. Alas, I had to cut the size of this picture in half to get it small enough to post here, but I couldn't bring myself to crop out this amazing web. I felt like I should have been on the set of an Indiana Jones movie or something. Maybe tomorrow I'll post the pictures of the pumpkins we carved.

I see the fence which gives it a little bit of a scale. anyway I walked into a web like this when i was six years old and i could not brake free at first. i saw the spider comeing at me and it looked like the ones in the movies. bigger that i was . guess i was so spooked by the spider it looked bigger than life. i did get away before the spider bite me but i ran home and hated spiders ever after. i do not kill them but i do not like to look at them

Great shot of this Orb Weaver~ ;) They are awesome and since they are so visible I leave them alone. I dislike creepy crawlies that surprise you, this one builds her home and stays put so I know to avoid her territory. Great capture with lots of detail~!

Wow! That's a spectacular photo, Mike! And super detail on the spider - man she looks huge! I forget what species this is, but they can get pretty big. We have these spiders here, too. One of them built a web right across the doorway to my patio - I didn't see it, and walked right into it, as the spider wasn't sitting in the middle like this one is. Anyway, the resulting dance I did could have earned me a spot on 'Dancing With The Stars.' In my mind, I was imagining an arachnid the size of Shelob! :-P

We have them here in Kansas as well. They are always building their webs between the posts of my car port--right where you have to go to get into the driver's seat!!! Most of the time you can see them shining in the light; other times they seem invisible. That's when you walk through them. Always ticks me off (I'm not afraid of the spider) but I expect not half as much as it does the spider. The next day, the web will be right back where it was. Mighty weavers are they!!
