Description

We in the West look upon the Third World as poor, but there is a big difference between having no money and being poor. While I found poverty in the larger cities, the rural areas were often overflowing with agricultural bounty. The market on Samosir verified this. Here you could find mangos, bananas, fish, noodles, red chilies, green beans, carrots, bean sprouts, scallions, papayas, bok choy, (stops to take a breath) cigarettes, soap, spices, toothpaste, even a baby in a basket. The market also served as a social center where neighbors could meet and catch up on each other's lives and swap gossip. Entire families would come to market. While the parents shopped, the children would play, usually watched over by grandma. So many times I would be asked if I was married and had children. When I said no a look of sadness would come over the questioner's face. In their eyes I was the one who was poor.

So true, we do not need wealth to be rich, and having no wealth does not always mean you are poor or have a poor life. Kind of like alcohol addiction. If you can afford, and do drink booze every day, most people will not call you an alcoholic even though you probably are one. But the moment you cannot afford your daily booze, people will label you as an alcoholic or worse. I saw that in some family members and it caused me to become very afraid of alcohol and I still am to some extent.

My eyes light up .... all gifts of mother nature for the people. In Europe we are eating genetically engineered-artificial food and should us ashamed, the nature to copy! The poor countries are outwardly poor, but they are "still" consistent with himself and nature. Their mentality is warm, thoughtful and practical. Your words and pictures prove it.

A feast for the eyes! As for who sets the standards for wealth, are usually poor in character.

There is a wealth of good things here! It's funny, the Western looking goods in the middle top image look over packaged and a bit trashy in the midst of all this natural goodness. Have you heard the Tracy Chapman song "Mountain of Things"? (Have I asked you that before?) If not, check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdF-oiaICZI Wonderful images! I especially like the one on the top left and the one on the top right. Excellent collage and words.

Quite a different experience going to market in this wonderful place. In my market, the food is safely hidden from my view behind plastic showing only the good side up! A lovely collection of candid and beautifully composed pictures. One can really get a sense of the place from them. You are lucky to have traveled to so many wonderful and exotic places. You even got to bring back these great photos to share. Thanks!!
