Description

The town in the near field (relatively speaking) is Buena Vista, Colorado. Any bets on how they came up with that name? LOL! What a beautiful view they've got! There's a relatively amazing (to me) phenomenon in this country concerning the pronunciation of town names. For example, Lima, Ohio is pronounced LI-ma, like the bean ... not LEE-ma, like the city in Peru. Cairo, Illinois is pronounced Kerr-O, like the syrup, not KAI-ro, like the city in Egypt. Buena Vista, Colorado, is pronounced BEU-na Vista, like the "e" doesn't exist, not BWAY-na Vista, like you'd think. Regardless of the eccentricities of American pronunciation of proper names, this place is just gorgeous. Beautiful View, indeed!

What a beautiful scene. Hurricane, UT is not pronounced Hurricane as in a storm but her-a-kun. Don't ask me why.

It is a beautiful view. We have a street here named "Buena Vista" and it's pronounced like you'd think it would be. :c) I will probably forget about these different pronunciations, but it was interesting to know there are differences.

Now that's what I call a landscape! Gorgeous!! Isn't it funny how things are pronounced? Like why is Couch Street pronounced "Cooch"? I think it's just so they can tell if you're a full time resident or just passing through....!

My speculation...unlearned men, 150-200 years ago who knew no world geography and no foreign languages except their own old country tongue, picked names almost randomly and their mispronunciations stuck. Loved this naturally framed vista the moment we crested the hill and saw it. Finely presented and postworked:*

I actually heard a woman pronounce La Jolla as, yeah you got it, with the hard "J" and with the "L's". She was NOT from California!! lol But I can see why it's a buena vista, it's even MUY buena!!

Beautiful view Tara. i came through there in late November (1986) and there was a lot more snow. Regardless, it is a beautiful place. Didn't know about the different pronuniations of the names.
