Description

Hi everyone, been a while! Hope you're all doing well :) Here's an image from sunset a few weeks back at our local high ground at Burton Dassett country park, Warwickshire. I've posted an image from this spot before but was never quite satisfied with the bland sky so it was still kind of lurking on my 'to do' list of local scenics. The day I shot this image it was so windy I almost got blown away but in the end it was worth it as I finally got the light and sky I was after. The little black dot in the sky towards the right of the frame is a kite... must have been a great day for it!! The structure in the foreground is a triangulation point (Wiki entry) and you can see my previous attempt from this spot here. News this end? Well I've just released my Scenic Britain A3 wall calendar which is now for sale through my website (with worldwide shipping available). It features 13 images of the British landscape to take you on a scenic journey through the seasons (the above image is 'September' by the way). Full details here: Scenic Britain Calendar 2012. Apart from that I managed to snap my collarbone a few days ago just as the autumn colours are beginning to find their stride... great timing. We shall however overcome... somehow :) Hope you enjoy the image and have a great weekend! On now with the daunting but enjoyable task of trying to get a bit caught up on here! Adam

Hope you get fixed up very soon. I confess I am a "Trig-Point bagger" myself. I love buying a new OS map and going to all the high points!. If I sign a non-disclosure will you tell me what postwork (& software) you used here????

hehe thanks for the comments everyone... Steve no need for a non disclosure, in fact I'll share the steps here in case anyone else can take something from them too :) 3 exposures used, 1 for foreground, 1 for most of the sky, and one localised for the sun. RAW adjustments and conversion in Lightroom 3. Exposures were then blended together using layer masks in photoshop - gradients used to blend the foreground/sky together, then a localised radial gradient combined with luminosity masks and low-opacity brushing for the sun to retain highlight detail while maintaining a natural bright look to the sun. Once the images were blended, I duplicated the background layer, set the duplicated layer to multiply, and used the blue channel as a layer mask, painting out the foreground of the layer mask with black so I essentially had a selection of the blues in the sky. Then duplicated this layer (with mask) and set the other layer to 'soft light'. This basically gave me two layers for the sky adjustments, one to darken, the other to add contrast. Adjusted opacities until it looked right. Next step was a gentle all-over S-curve adjustment to add a touch of contrast. Then a gentle saturation boost using the channel mixer. Crop to a more panoramic format, a touch of noise reduction, resize, sharpen, done :) Hope that helps! Always happy to clarify any steps, just email or sitemail me.
