Description

...what a day for Rocky Mountain vistas. ...we had departed from Colorado Springs, Colorado in mid-morning and had driven only 50 miles west when we found ourselves driving through Wilkerson Pass (9,507 ft/2898m) into South Park, one of Colorado's three beautiful and historic high plains state parks. ...this view was too much to simply drive by. ...here we are looking west/southwest across Bayou Salado toward the Collegiate Mountain Range. Looking from left to right, Mt. Princeton (14,197 ft) is on the left, Spinney Mountain Reservoir is in the center mid-ground, Mt. Yale (14,196 ft) is next and half of Mt. Columbia (14,073 ft) shows on the right edge of this image. Further to the right out of sight is Mt. Harvard (14,420 ft). ...this area was Ute Indian territory until prospectors looking for gold began pouring into the area in 1859. Gold was found and the fight was on... ...anyone interested in history/geology/maps of the area, here's a great link: The Lost Mine of Dead Man's Gulch. Bill "Surrounded" thumb_2264990.jpg

Absolutely beautiful! And you're not surrounded by menacing "Halloween trees". The mining story is quite interesting. I wonder what happened to the Ute Indians. They put up a long fight. The names of the mountians are funny - wonder who had the idea of naming the peaks after universities in the EAST! Interesting how the clouds cast their shadows on the land and thus shift the colors. This could also be from Africa - I've seen similar photos (I think from the Serengeti?). Thanks for stopping to take this photo and for posting it. Keep up the good work! :-)

Amazing shot, Bill! I've often been frustrated trying to communicate the feeling of awe when immersed in a scene like this. How does one capture that in a mere photograph? But you have managed it beautifully here - the depth is just amazing. Awesome, Bill, just awesome!

South Park and not a Cartman in sight :-) Great expanse, I hope you resisted the urge to jog down to the sunny spot, I have a feeling it's further than it looks, especially if they are houses down there..

Amazing! South Park? Why did Cartman's voice just pop into my head, saying: "You will respect my authorit-ay!"? Hmmm...too much Comedy Central I think. And now, onto this shot! WOW! This is one of those vistas that only Nature can come up with, and if I ever saw this while having a conversation WITH Nature, I could easily hear myself saying something like: "Oh, and look where you put that mountain, isn't that interesting!" This is such a gorgeous shot and I love the sense of scale and scope! Brilliant!
