Description

...Smith Rock State Park encompasses 651 acres on the Oregon high desert plateau, which hovers around 3000 feet in elevation. ...The major rock faces are composed of welded tuff (compressed volcanic ash) reaching a height of up to 550 feet. The picnic and campground areas sit on top of the rimrock, which is made up of columnar basalt. ...the snowy, volcanic peak on the horizon is part of the Cascade Range. Wow! Another really dramatic photo of wild, undisturbed nature (at least from what we see through the camera's lens). And, thanks for the geology lesson. Now, you've got my curiosity piqued - what volcano is that snow covered peak in the distance? Keep 'em coming! :-)

Any mention of 'American Wilderness', this is what I imagine...I've zoomed and looked hard but I don't see any tee-pee's by the river...shame. This is an awsome view, my Wife has a stock comment for views like this, "if I was going to build a house....." this time she'd be dead right, beautiful....

Superb clarity and lighting bring out the wonderful DOF and textures in this stellar view, Bill. And I see contrails up on high.

H'm, no "teepees" and no rock climbers. Must be an off day for such a great scene. If someone says "welded tuff" It was welded with heat, not compression. There are many examples of such in the Western Interior, especially near the Cascades and Great Basin. They are the products of glowing gaseous volcanic clouds (nuee ardente) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuee_ardente). Don't get me wrong, burial with a kilometer of overburden may help with compression, but it isn't needed to make this kind of rock.
