Description

One of these day's 'Tailspin' and I will be on the same page!.We've been busy in 'The Plant' building a Type VII U-Boat and it was outgrowing the workshop. We descided to move it into the dry dock for completion, it went down the ramp into the 'Duck Pond', 'Tailspin' had the Conn and Dr Vonn Krupp was busy below decks. All 'Tailspin' had to do was guide it into the dry dock, but ooooohhh no!.The local Police helicopter passed overhead and 'Tailspin' initiated a crash dive.....we have not installed any compressed air system, dive planes or the electric motors....and so now the sub is sitting at the bottom of the 'Duck Pond'. Now I could just open the sluice gates and drain the pond, it would only take a couple of hours, but I've descided to leave them down there for a while.Dr Vonn Krupp is happy enough but 'Tailspin' doesn't like confined spaces so this will teach him a lesson.Of course the upshot of this is a not very detailed picture, but I'll have that sorted for the next post......my one worry is if 'Tailspin' starts wandering around and finds out the torpedo room is fully functional........ I should point out the 'Duck Pond' is an expanse of water at the back of 'The Plant', it's actually quite large and shows up on the OS maps as an inland sea.It got it's name when we first tested the DUKW on it.Draining it will cause one minor problem, there'll be no Sunday service at "St Barnabus The Blasphemers" this weekend..... O.K, first up, I've always loved Bazze's U-99.Through all the crashes, updates and re-builds of the last few years, it's always one of the first things back in my runtime.I have descided however it's time to sink something else. The Type VII was the most prolific of all the U-Boats and went through many changes. There were 7 'official' variants and dozens of individual crew modifications. This model will have 3 interchangeable conning towers to reflect the progress from the U-Boats roll as surface raider to Anti-Aircraft platform. The 'attack' and 'air search' periscopes will be extendable and there will be a few other 'bits'. I also have an idea for 'half' a U-Boat, cut lengthways to show the interior, this would be quite a lot of work so I could do with feedback, would anyone use it? or would my time be better used building something else?. Thanks for dropping bye, any comments or thoughts always appreciated....

Nice work Neil once again. Small request. If you produce this for the folks in the outside world can you produce two versions please. One full version and one water-line version? Thanks.

@preeder....don't see any problem with that :-)

Nice to hear of this project. I do not know about a full blown stem to stern cutaway, but a torpedo room model and model of the control area ( I do not know what it is called.) would be nice for showing the crew drama in stills and animations.

@UVDan 'sectional sets', that could work..and a bit less work which I like :-)

Hmmmm.... typical Tailspin. Just wait until the oxygen runs out. They'll exit and leave your beautiful submarine full of water, sunk for real. Nice photo the police helecopter took of the sub. But, even in underwater position, it's STILL visible from the air! Doesn't Tailspin know that from all his flying about? Very nice image - the straight contours made wavey by the movement of the water, the shadow on the pond floor, the periscope wake. Now, just wait 'til the police show up with a request the sunk sub be removed for being bad for the environment, or face a stiff fine PLUS remove it! Sigh. Keep up the good work! :-)

Nice Neiwil, I think it would see lots of use, it's so hard to find good sub and ship models that are not 700,000 or more poylygons, which limits how many you can put in a secene!

Are you sure, Tailspin hasn't heard of something called "the snorkel"?? Good start!

Love your idea of the optional conning towers and weapon fits. I don't hnow if the cutaway version is worth your effort, better to do a type IX or XX1 ..or XXIII...or British T class, or S class..or pant pant drool. PS. Hope you did'nt scare the ducks!

Always like seeing a WIP or two before the final product. Good humor and good to see you've got Tailspin locked down for now:)

U-Boats always take me back to 'The Cruel Sea'. You know the scene , sailors bobbing up and down in the water as Jack Hawkins agonizes about releasing depth charges. Stunnung work so far Neil and I have to agree an interior would be good, Kapitan hunched over the scope looking for the next target snd yes don't forget the snorkel, ugly but essential. Oh and if it's anything like London don't worry about the Police helicopter, probably after kids in stolen cars. Good luck mate :)

Love the Tailspin story- you're so mean! Submarines were another one of my childhood obsessions, a bit like Daleks and Dinosaurs so I never gave up on such things. I am almost certain that I could find a use for a submarine interior. H'mmm creepy ghost story maybe?

Tailspins the nervous type (VII) then is he? LOL at your funny rhetoric mate - sorry but I missed this one. Looking forward to the model(s) release too!

I think such a project as you have suggested above would be useful--especially if detailed enough for interior shots, but would much, much rather have more of your regular models. Seems to me, the cutaway submarine would labor intensive and of somewhat limited use, as opposed to the other way of doing things.
