Description
Captured 12/11/11, at the beautiful Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, on the beautiful campus of California State University Long Beach, in beautiful Long Beach, California.
A ZOOM would be propitious.
Well, I returned to the garden yesterday (the sixth time?) with full expectations of finding the pond teeming with tons of the beautiful koi/carp, but was shocked, shocked, to find that there were no more there than there were when I visited many months ago. I had felt that more than enough time had passed for the pond to be elbow to elbow, or fin to fin, with the fishies, so abundant that you couldn't even see the water. Disappointed and disgusted, I asked one of the docents why the lack of koi after all this time, and was told to blame the blue herons that hang around in the tree tops, and when it's clear of humans, come swooping down to pick off the larger of the fish for a sumptuous repast. Which probably explains why I saw so many tiny ones but a minimum of the adult koi.
Anyway, although disappointed, I made the best of things and ended up with 148 fotos of the garden and small koi population. Also, I invaded everyone's privacy by photographing people without their permission. Even if I asked, it would have been mostly a waste of time because half of them didn't speak English. So there, politically correct people!
As for the photo itself, which I consider quite poignant, I had to do considerable brightening because it was taken through a long 28-200mm lens, with a polarizer, at a fast shutter speed, so it came out quite dark, and still a bit grainy after postwork.
Arrivederci, thankx for the peek, and for any and all favs and noncritical commments.

As you know, I like pics of people doing things, Harry! As for fin to fin, I expect you also know that there should be 2 square feet of water surface for every inch of fishbody, or they will suffocate.

durleybeachbum: I didn't know that. Okay, how about two-thirds of the pond loaded with the fishies, or half the pond?

I'm sure if the birds were not scooping up Koi, the humans would have to remove some to ensure the health of the rest. I would hate to see it, though. Nice shot.

The lady looks delighted to be hand-feeding the lucky koi; the koi looks equally happy to be fed! Wonderful photo, Harry!

Nice photo my friend. Sounds like you could get some pretty good photos of Herons in action if you waited around for the crowds to clear. :)

I'm situationally politically correct. If a parent of children is staring at me, I ask. Great image! I like the close contact the people are having with the fish. Very interesting about the herons. What a life of contrasts these koi have. Pampered luxury by day, and terror by night.

Outstanding! Aren't we fortunate that we don't have to jump through hoops to take pictures of people in public places. This is one of our freedoms not yet encroached upon. The herons use the pond as a fast food restaurant then:)

I think it is a great shot Harry and plenty of Koi in this photo. One of the Koi looks like it is eating right of her hand.
