Description

This is inspired by the "Special" delivery of 47 Spitfires to the beleaguered allied forces on the island of Malta. On April 19, 1942, the USS Wasp in the company of the ships of Task Force 39 entered the Straits of Gibraltar in the predawn darkness, and with the cover of her Wildcat fighters, at 0400, she successfully launched all but one of the Spitfires. This was one of two of her ferry missions to Malta. My camera crew tells me that this was one hell of a shot to shoot and light...grouse, grouse, grouse...after all, they did get a Mediterranean cruise out of it, didn't they? "Grouse, grouse" my first thought was of "The making of" for "Looksy or appetizer" with your intrepid wing walking cameraman :-) An event I'm well familiar with, a great story and vital mission..love the pov, and the night running red light on the bridge is an inspired touch. You are developing a real flare for these carrier images, excellent work.....

Excellent...the details really help to fill in the gaps to make it "all in a days work" for a carrier

Superbly done, that slight wobble the first Spit has as it comes off the end...it hasn't picked up a decent airspeed yet....but the flaps help! Just great!

It as questioned if this would work at all due to the Spitfire's take-off range. The first one dipped below the bow and all thought it had gone into the sea, but where relieved when it rose from that harrowing drop! The following planes had a longer take-off margine as the planes in front took off. One of those less well known achievements during WWII. EXCELLENT render! Happy New Year to you! Keep up the good work! :-)

Wonderful use of light; love the dramatic, foreboding cloud bank and the brightly lit fighter. Excellent work!

Stunning carrier scene with all the detail when zoomed in. The take off 'wobble' just adds to the realism. Well done Bill!
