Description

I spotted this tree near the supermarket a few weeks ago. I have walked past this tree at least once a week for 12 years. I have never seen these red berries before and 2 weeks later they were all gone. The tree is about 20 feet (6 meters) high. Each of the berry branches are about a foot (30 cm) long. The berries could be tiny flowers. Zoom will help. Thanks to Brigitte (Blondeblurr) for the ID of Umbrella tree native to tropical rainforests in Australia (eastern Queensland and the Northern Territory), New Guinea and Java. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

This is really very easy, because I have got one in my garden, it's an Umbrella tree (Schefflera actinophylla or Brassaia actinophylla), grows in our North Queensland rainforests up to 14-16m high and in Hawaii it's also known as Octopus tree. Our multicoloured Lorikeet's or also known as Rozella's love those red flowering berries and get literally 'drunk' on them, hanging even upside on the branches and screeching every morning and afternoon ... it's quite a happy, noisy and maddening concert at times! Hope this helps Dana, BB

What a wonderful plant! I'm glad Brigitte identified it..I am one of those irritating folk who need to know the names of plants etc.

What an odd tree. From this distance those berry spines look like pipe cleaners in this stellar capture of the arboreal wonder, Dana.

I've never seen one of these either, they would make a great sight with those fans of berries. An excellent capture. I love seeing new plants so thank you for posting.
