Description

This week I worked through the tutorial and decided that I wanted to do a different type of image. Instead of using a flat background plane, I explored Blender's world, atmosphere and sun settings to make mist and apply a texture directly to the world sky and blend it with a visible sun, as opposed to creating the sun and distance blurring in the compositor. The sea was made with the ocean simulator. The ocean material uses a Blinn shader model for specularity and also uses subsurface scattering. My longest Blender render so far, 22 minutes to render the final scene. No compositing at all. Please look at this full size.

Very cooooool! I take you didn't render it with Cycles! 22 minutes is not bad indeed!

He he, no I haven't rendered anything with Cycles yet, I wouldn't know where to start! Thank you for the encouragement. I am still experimenting with various material settings and have obtained a few renders that I like. I am used to Poser and Bryce materials and it is taking me a while to figure out how Blender materials work. When I graduate to Cycles I suppose I shall have to unlearn a few things I am learning now.

You always leave me with my jaw hanging on the floor, Nanette. This is beautifully done ... and ... 22 minutes??? Oh my. Who needs the good old days? No more 20-hour renders. :) Keep up your beautiful work ... I love seeing what you're doing.

A beautiful image and I love how the sea looks to be moving across my screen. A super atmosphere too.

Wow, that's gorgeous. All it needs is a sailboat. Want one??? lol Poser-ready, bit of a toy atm. I do love the mood, though - very sea-and-sky, and a star to steer her by... LOVE it, Nanette!

The ocean simulator does generate amazing movement of the water. The foam mask is not quite a mature effect yet, so I did without it for this image. I am sure it will improve. And yes, it needs a boat. But now I am going to model a rose first - I was a little disappointed that we didn't learn how to do that when we covered flowers, so I am going to have to teach myself. Thank you for the wonderful support while I learn.
