Description
Volume I - Episode 60
Where: Melbourne, Australia
When: 17 days after E-Day, 7:03 am
My alarm went off at 7 am.
I woke up feeling calm and rested after a good night's sleep. Bleak, grey sunlight filtered in through my bedroom window. It was cloudy out there.
I kicked off the sheets and rolled out of bed. Once upon a time I had dreaded getting up on Monday mornings, having to go through the usual daily routine of showering and getting dressed and going to work, when all I wanted to do was stay at home and play.
All that changed after the apocalypse.
In this era of no work and no responsibilities and no people, my daily routine was a lot more relaxed...
* alarm at 7 am
* stumble out of bed
* look out the window to see if the end-of-the-world has ended yet
* top up the fuel in the generator
* check the LP gas level in the portable water heater, replace if necessary (nothing worse than a cold shower)
* top up the water in the cool water tank and the water heater (nothing worse than a dry shower)
* revel in the magnificent luxury of a 60-second warm shower
* apply liberal quantities of deodorant and skin moisturiser (required for comfort, aftershave is no longer necessary in a world that has no women to sniff my neck)
* get dressed
* get breakfast
* play games, watch DVD's, read books, exercise, and scavenge until midday
* get lunch
* play games, watch DVD's, read books, exercise, and scavenge until 6 pm
* top up the fuel in the generator
* get dinner
* play games, watch DVD's, read books, exercise and scavenge until 10 pm
* go to bed and read until 11 pm
* go to sleep
* dream about everything that I will never see again - websites, overseas countries, the final two Harry Potter movies, girls.
I climbed the stairs of my small split-level unit and stepped into my living room. From outside came the familiar song of birds tweeting their cheery greeting at the (clouded-over) morning sun, and the rumble of my generator...but no other sound.
Just another day after the apocalypse.
