Description

Another dip into the photo archives..... More of an update, really, than some dazzling work of art.... Monday, my mother-in-law was transferred to the Kansas City Hospice Home. This will be her home from now on. It is a beautiful facility, and they are making her as comfortable as possible. Her doctor looked at the CAT scans taken at the hospital - the tumor in one of her lungs has grown quite a bit. He said she has only a few weeks left. She's been a brave, tough lady for the past 6 years, since losing her husband to cancer in January of '06. She was determined to stay as independent as possible, and she did pretty much until last week. I will be in and out of Rendo over the next few weeks - I'll post when I can, and comment when I can. We will be spending a good deal of time at the hospice,of course. They do have WiFi there, so I'll have an opportunity to get on line. Mom will be sleepng most of the time - that's pretty much all she does now. I will be back once everything settles a bit. I have the TNA series all planned out through chapter 3; now all I have to do is put the images together. I have a good start on the next page, and will continue to work on it as time permits. My art is, for me, a form of therapy; an escape from the painful times of life as much as it is a celebration of happier times. I thank you all for your thoughts, your prayers, and the comfort of your friendship. Bless you all! This photo was taken (obviously) at an antique auto show some years ago at the Kansas City Museum. I liked the way the wheels were lined up. I ran this image through a bit of Photoshop playing to give it a bit of an 'old timey' look. My last upload 'Afternoon Light, Watkins Mill' was selected as one of the Photos of the Week in the Photography Forum. That gave me a badly needed lift! Thank you, Photo Forum Mods! Hope everyone has a great week!

I didn't know what the word Hospice meant or what it was about until the doctor told my Mom she was going there - I was sitting in the room when he told her. she choked up as if she were to cry - My Mom was tough and out of my whole life experience, I've never seen her like that for just 2 seconds... when the Dr. was done talking, I asked her what Hospice was and she said they send you there to die... she said no one ever goes home from there. She was gone with in a week. The word Hospice now makes me cry... If I could go back for just those few days she was in Hospice, I'd stop and her favorite fast food places and take her fries, shakes, frostys, banana splits... I miss my Mom and hearing what your going through - I remember.

My Dad had terminal cancer too, diagnosed around Christmas, so I am empathetic to what you are going through. Agree with Bazza, I hope for her sake that the end comes without lingering and to much pain. Just seeing them hurt so much is the worst part, and nothing you can do about it. This is a lovely photo and I am glad to learn that your other picture got picked for the Photo of the Week. It's a nice little buzz.

OMG! Rod my friend that horrible news, dang nab i was praying to hear something better my friend, words are hard to find at difficult times like this Rod, i have you in thoughts and prayers still my friend. this just really tares at the heart. i was already saddened by the loss of Joe Paterno, and this news you have sure did not makes things any happier. i hate cancer!! hurts so many great people. i hope she is comfortable as possible in her last days Rod. and i hope this place really takes good care of her. so much depresing news of late from all around, besides myself my muse is even bummed and not wanting to work. i don't know what else Rod to say to help ease the feelings and sadness your going through my friend. your mother in law sounds like a fighter, that is super. give her my love and prayers Rod. i mentioned prayers for you in my last post, and after reading this i'm just plain sad.. :( lol Steve love your shot!!

Very cool shot. A family friend just got a giant black car from the '30s restored. Beautiful thing, but I don't remember the make or model. I'm very sorry to hear about your mom in law. There is just nothing good to say other than I too hope she is comfortable the whole time. She seems like a great person and she'll have lots of support till the end, and that is very important. I keep you and your family in my thoughts.

I love this shot ... the repetition is just right, and your postwork is superb! I'm glad to hear Jo's mom has a Hospice facility available, and that you're taking advantage of that service. It's a wonderful organization ... they'll help make your experience as gentle and as meaningful as possible. I'm sending loads of love your way ... my heart is with you both.

Ref your image...those were the days:) The days well before emission controls and computer chips...when I could actually get around an engine compartment with standard tools and fix something. Afterall there wasn't much under those hoods...was there? Engine block, carb, distributor, spark plugs, wiring harness, fan, radiator, a few hoses and a battery. Just the essentials! As for your mother-in-law...will keep her in my prayers...and all of you too. Love the crop and postwork.

Make sure you visit and keep an eye on the staff. My mom had alzheimers and eventually had to go to the same type of facility. Was there when aid was changing her. He asked me to leave while he did it. Said no. What I was a big bed sore.. Never saw one before and it looked like a crater..That is when a patient is in one position too long...Think my voice was heard next door. After she passed the radio I brought in for her was missing. I found it. Guess the staff was using it. This is a hard time mentally and physically. Been there so know what you are going through.

Ooooooooooooh ROD! I am SOOOOOOO SORRY for both you and Jo and her mom! I type this through my tears because I know all too well what you are going through and will go through as the near future approaches. I have been through this MANY times with many friends and family members and one NEVER gets used to it. It's REALLY hard! Though there is nothing any of us can do to help, please, please, PLEASE, let Jo know that I grieve with you both over what you are going through and what is soon to come. I understand and truly care.

This is not the good news that I was hoping to hear from you but I am glad that she is in a Hospice as they really care. I hope that she is in no pain and that she can talk to you a little. You are all in my thoughts. Hugs. Cancer is an awful thing and takes too many people, I just wish they would find a cure. This is a great photo and the sepia makes it so appropriate. Well spotted.

Rod, I'm so sorry to hear this. I lost 2 moms to cancer (my biological mom when I was 20, and my stepmom just over 5 years ago). My heart goes out to you and your family... And not to diminish your work with the TNA girls (I honestly look forward to their adventures), but I have to say WOW!, your photography is completely AWESOME!!

Man I'm so sorry to hear what's happening. I know how hard it can be, having seen too many people go in a similar way over the years. Hang in there, don't forget to take care of yourself as well, and know that there are lots of people pulling for you, no matter what. Wonderful photo, too. Perfect for the subject at hand.
