Description

This is the lychgate at the Evergreen Cemetery in Everett, Washington. The cemetery was opened in 1898, and I've seen a photo of this gate dated 1908, so it was built some time during that ten year period. I had no idea what a lychgate was, so I did some research. Apparently they're thick on the ground in England (I found three in Bournemouth without even breaking a sweat) and many of them date to the 15th century. (There's one in South London that's said to be 13th century.) Ours, at just over a hundred years old, is a young-un! There aren't many here in the States though, so having one at all is interesting. Lychgate Wiki here.

Interesting picture Tara - and it is blue sky, wow! I have never seen it while I was stationed up there, but then we had different priorities, taking pictures, and taking pictures of cemetery entrances was not on our list of things to do lol!

Not only an interesting subject but the late afternoon light is spectacular. I just knew as we pulled up to this place that our cameras were going to get a real workout. Well done!

Yes Tara they are common in the UK but not many are as posh as this one, most are timber framed often with a thatched roof I will try to find a shot of one.

What we lack in age and tradition we more than make up in good looks. This is a very handsome example of a lychgate. Color and shape have it all over the English versions. Wonderful capture.

We haven't any so ornate here in England but, as you say, we do have a lot of them! This is a lovely shot Tara.

I like the detail in the stone and the gate. Thanks for the history lesson. Now I have more information in my head that might come up in a conversation.

How cool, I've heard the term but never knew what it actually was. Thanks for the information! And this image is stunning, there's a glow about it that really makes it jump off the screen. Clearly your work, and marvelously beautiful!

Yes! We have one or two about Stamford.... Well, every church has one.. lol I 'Think', the main gate was for carts, hurse's,(have I spelt that right lol) cars etc to go through AND the Lynchgate was for people just on foot.. Simple really.. Great shot Tara, well done.. Rob PS, I'm more than likely WAY wrong! lol
