Valentine's Day is traditionally associated with romantic love between two people & there's certainly nothing wrong with that. As of next month, I will have been been married to my dear wife (who I still love very much) for 40 years & I wish her a very happy Valentine's Day. But I also believe in the truth of the two statements above about expanding our love & compassion as far as we can, one stated in an intellectual way by one of the greatest minds of the last century & the other in the form of a very simple song lyric by a folk/rock musician. Cynics may write it off as naive hippie nonsense, but we all have to believe in something & it seems like as good a principle as any to me.
