Description

Another shot taken at the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love celebration. This is a crop of a much larger photo of people on a hillside. The full photo just didn't work well as a composition & I liked the way removing the context of the hillside location makes it look like these people are stacked vertically (if you look at it in a certain way)... There's something special about outdoor music concerts & festivals. Unlike auditoriums where you're confined to your seat or small clubs, where the space is very limited, you get to walk around & meet people & enjoy the sunshine. I've been to many over the years, among the most memorable of which were the original Woodstock in 1969, the Bath Music Festival in England in 1970, & the US Festival in San Bernadino in 1982, as well as this one in 2007. I also remember many free concerts in Central Park in NY, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco & Provo Park in Berkeley. In southern Oregon where I live now, the historic town of Jacksonville hosts the Britt Festivals each year, which is an outdoor series of concerts that runs from about June to September. I worked as a volunteer usher for several years there, which was a great way to do community service & get to attend shows for free. No longer volunteering, but still attending several shows each year. For the cash strapped, you can bring lawn chairs & attend for free on "Cheapskate Hill", right outside the grounds. Here's a blurb from the Britt website: "Celebrating its 50th season, Britt Festivals, a non-profit organization, is the Pacific Northwest's premier outdoor summer performing arts festival. Located in the historic 1850s gold rush town of Jacksonville, Oregon (USA), Britt presents dozens of summer concerts, featuring world-class artists in classical music, jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass, world, pop and country music. Britt's performance venue is a naturally formed amphitheater set among majestic ponderosa pines and native madrones on the beautiful hillside estate of 19th century photographer Peter Britt. Viewing a map of the facility will give you a clearer picture of how we have combined stadium seating within this natural setting. Tens of thousands of music lovers travel from all over the West to enjoy Britt's world-class performances, spectacular scenery and casual, relaxing atmosphere."

Love it. This makes me think of the old guess the number of beans in the jar contests... How many people do you see here? lol.
