Description
This bus was parked near the exhibit area. It follows a long tradition of colorfully painted buses & other vehicles that was one of the hallmarks of the psychedelic scene. The first (I believe?) & certainly the most famous was Further, the bus that Ken Kesey & the Merry Pranksters took on a cross country trip in 1964, spreading the gospel of LSD far & wide. That trip is legendary & is entertainingly documented in Tom Wolfe's classic book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test", which I read long ago.
Janis Joplin had a psychedelically painted Porsche ("O Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz, my friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends") which I saw at another Summer of Love commemorative event - an art exhibit at the Whitney Museum in NYC. I happened to be there for my own 40th anniversary celebration - my high school reunion. I'll post a photo I took of that Porsche at some point...

Everybody knew somebody with a bus like that! even today I can see some old VW Kombi-vans decorated so spectacularly, still driving around, usually rented by backpackers from Europe, visiting us here in Australia ... marvellous memories and certainly worthy of a zoom, BB
